After tax, my accountant wife makes 1600EUR or 1900USD. I take home 2200EUR or 2700USD as a SCNO. If you don't work for whatever reason, you have a guaranteed minimum wage of 1200EUR or 1400USD. That is BEFORE benefits, social security or assistance, or unemployment pay. On everything else, we pay a VAT of 21%. Twenty. One. Percent. Yeah our healthcare is free. But we pay for it. Also, European open border policy is a deathsentence. Asylumseekers set one foot on our soil and they're in. Free healthcare. Free housing. Free utilities. Free this. Free that. Meanwhile, a nursing home is quickly becoming unpayable for retirees that worked all their life, and paid their taxes. -Our military is a joke. As NATO member we pledge to spend 2% of our GDP on Defence. We are required to do so. We consistently fail to meet this obligation. One day we will pay the price for this. If the stars ever align, I'd make that move in a heartbeat. act accordingly. |

Just heard second hand from a friend that UK income taxes are much simpler and predictable. Rather than a monstrous multi form calculation, the exact amount owed is withheld and that is that. No refunds, no end of year payment.
Not arguing for their rates (no idea) or VAT, but if we have an income tax it should be that freakin simple. The whole mess of deductions, exemptions, credits, variable rates is pure corruption. Ideally I would rather have a flat sales tax. You see it every time you spend so not as likely to vote to raise it. But yeah, an income tax that is so straightforward it can be withheld at paycheck time accurately is a start. |

I take about 4-5 week long or longer vacations a year. This year I am taking a month off to go to Europe. Leaving for Mexico for a week next week. Going to Hawaii in July. Visiting my NY family in the fall. Camping for a few weeks in the fall as well.
You got to plan, and just do it. No one is irreplaceable at work, just delegate, and enjoy life while you can. |

And there are so many of them, and they are so variable, that it's not really possible to precisely predict what your taxable income will be a year in advance. But for a regular employee who gets a regular paycheck on a regular schedule (most people), it's actually pretty simple. In actual practice. Having said that, be prepared for an onslaught of "Yeah, but..." responses. Not a single member of this website is average, and every last one of us has complicated tax situations not shared by normal Americans. You'll see.

I don't plan to have regular hours, just by appointments and occasional transfers. I'm with you, there is no reason to stay past first retirement eligibility, unless you have some overarching financial issue, like a kid starting college, or you just got divorced and gave your ex all your retirement money. A great paper written on the topic is entitled "I can't afford to retire" by Chris Barfield. It's tailor written for federal LEOs but the principal applies universally. If you continue to work after you're eligible, you're actually only working for the difference in what you're making vs. what you'd be receiving to sit at home and drink beer, retired. For most of us, it's close to minimum wage. Not doing this job for minimum wage. |

The metric epitome for determining the maximum productivity extraction is you crawling home in tears. Every day. I like to emphasize savings rate & personal health (mental & physical). How much are you actually saving vs spending? Are you doing anything else besides just working? You can't stay in shape at OTJ. They aren't paying you to be healthy, & letting yourself go long term for work is setting up your own personal sabotage in the long run. The downhill medical/physical road is a 1-way trip into the weeds that money can't money can't buy you out of. |

Stop eating so much Macaroni & Cheese, that shit's disgusting. Don't be so cheap with your money: Americans usually make more but are more scared to spend it and they buy low quality junk. When doing blue-collar work, wear overalls or coveralls, preferable with reflective tape on them. English Joke: European tourists are at a Florida eco-tourist trap & American guide says these American Gators & Australian Crocs look the same but are different. Englishman asks, "How can you tell the difference, is it because the American ones just lay around & do nothing?".

The ones I work with routinely disappear for one or two weeks at various times throughout the year. Their attitude seems to be that either their business colleagues can step in in their absence, or it can jolly well wait until they return. I rarely work with a European professional that has the "squirrel on crack" mindset that so many US professionals do. Not advocating being lazy, but damn, IMO we could learn a thing or two from them about this. |
