parts are all cleaned, going to try a 1 to 1 bone wood mix. 1350f for 2 hrs then drop to 1100f for an Hr then quench in bubbly icewater. Everything is packed and ready to go Sat. Looking like a 5Hr thing watching the oven.. Blech. Might be able to get the NitreBlue done at the same time..

BUT if it comes out good, I might do a 1911 frame next.. Which would look tits..

I keep thinking an AK receiver would look tits like that, especially if you blued the rest of the metal and put some nice wood on it.

IIRC, I believe the Old Colts were also wrapped in animal hide and placed in the coals.

it was bits of chared leather added it it as well as Cyanide. they have been getting a lookalike to the old Marlin CCH with just Bone and Wood from brownells. We refinish a lot of old shotguns and it would be cool to do the CCH that LC and Crescent did to their old guns.

Want to do the receiver of a Winchester 1897 shotgun?  That would look awesome with bluing on the rest and new wood.  Otherwise I'll do a parkerized trench gun.

Many moons ago while an indentured servant in my dad's business, we would case harden parts by adding carbon at heat using bone, leather, wood or charcoal and cyanide powder. The parts and the previously mentioned ingredients were placed in a metal box then into the furnace for a while depending on the surface area and depth of hardness required. Some alloys would take on a really nice patina after the case hardening process, others would just get nasty. I never tried producing a desired color though, it will be interesting to see how yours turn out.

What ive been reading is the quench is the magic part in getting the colors, Guys are using jigs that have shields on them to block the water getting a slower cool down. Fast cool down gives you browns/no color slower gives you blues and purples. Im going to try using the crucible cap as the shield/brake then the shotgun action follows it into the tank.

This what they are getting with shields..

also dropping from 1350 to 1100 helps combat warping.

If I may be honest, those look like ass.

The only case hardened gun I've had was a Perazzi. That thing was beautiful. Wish I had taken a decent pic before I sold it.

always wanted a case hardened 1911...

how are you getting the oven that hot? I've heard of guys doing this with torches, but that seems half assed at best.

You need to dunk at your hottest and as soon as you get it out of the oven. Dropping the temperature increases the chances of warping..

If you take it to temperature two times with a slow cool before each reheat then take it to the 1375-1425 range and quick dump you can lower the chances of warping significantly.
