Stevens (and modern CPA Stevens) used the Cyanide dipped case hardening.  The up and down dipping into the molten cyanide is what gives it the tiger stripes.  It actually produces a much harder surface the bone & charcoal method.

This is original Marlin CC

Fats, you should experiment on Raider's steel lower.  I bet he'd go for it.

I have a gunsmithing book from the 1800s & it says to put the parts in a pipe filled with leather & bone meal. It also mentions you get better colors the higher the polish on the part.

But it also says the best barrel steels are made from old chains.

Definitely not DIY home project. I've toyed with the idea for years, but figured I would leave it to the experts.

What ive been reading is the quench is the magic part in getting the colors, Guys are using jigs that have shields on them to block the water getting a slower cool down. Fast cool down gives you browns/no color slower gives you blues and purples. Im going to try using the crucible cap as the shield/brake then the shotgun action follows it into the tank.

This what they are getting with shields..

also dropping from 1350 to 1100 helps combat warping.

when I get a break ill polish up a K98 action i have here and see what that looks like..

the 4140 was just papertowel wrapped and then SS over it. I was shocked at the colors.. I might try making a burrito wrap out of course wire mesh with the charcoal then the metal in the center. Then drop all that in the crucible. Packed with more charcoal. would give me a slower quench making more colors. Im thinking..
