It’s been something we’ve discussed for many years, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that we’ve finally stepped up to try to get GD back to something closer to what it used to be. Basically we just want the site to be a place that is not characterized by people who think it’s okay to act like a dick towards others, just for their own amusement. |

"You laugh, you lose" now has a whole different meaning. Now, if a meme is really funny, it's more likely to result in a ban/lock, ie, you lose.  Posting humor that's acceptable at work? Where, DK, your work? That's going to result in nothing but dad jokes (jokes so lame, only a dad could tell them). At M35Ben's shop? That's a whole different class of humor, no offense to either of you. At my workplace, I don't think I could share ANY jokes, except a bit of subtle dark humor. But dark humor is banned, too. Also, does your department chair know you're spending "work" time monitoring internet humor?  That's one heck of a cushy gig.

I appreciate you addressing my post, although I came around in 2008 (you are right, election was a catalyst for me coming here) so I don’t know much about the “old days” before that time period. I would respectfully say that there is a difference between “being a dick towards others” like persona attacks and dark humor that gets panties in a wad but is not attacking. I think the majority of people here who voice their disdain for the changes in YLYL threads want that latter, and are not asking for the former. If we guard against everything that might offend someone that is not a personal attack, we still would not be able to post much of anything. JMHO as someone who paid for membership for around 10 years and would go back to being a paid member if a few things changed here (reversal of some of the direction of this site over the past 2-ish years). |

I remember certain people (SteyrAUG among others) arguing endlessly for BOTD in GD. I don't see that fight as my circus or my monkeys, none of my business, but when you mentioned it, I thought about the 'old days' before 2008ish, when we'd have endless threads full of photoshops of TRG and ILL and 1GR and others. They were always good for a laugh and nobody ever pushed the line. (Just kidding - the line has always been pushed, and I'll freely admit to pushing it myself in other areas). |
