Taking a break from things political today. I get one local affiliate channel on rabbit ears. Old rerun of Martial Law is on. Fat Sammo and his lovely subordinate, Kelly Hu, are in life or death physical combat with a team of murderous ninja assasins. One ninjy breaks out the "deadly" throwing stars. Luckily for the lovely lady cop, a criminal, who is in love with her, throws himself in the path of the sailing star. Saves her from being the recipient.

OK, I've seen these stupid thing used in about every martial art movie since the Bluce Ree days. Little two ounce pointy things that might penetrate one 1/2".

"But, but real ninjy masters carried poisoned stars!"

Yeah, the ninjas practiced since childhood with cyanide tipped, razor sharp throwing stars? OK.

This thread will suck without a pic of the lovely lady saved in this episode.

Always was funny seeing those tiny ninja stars doing so much damage in the movies, now if they made them 12 inches across and they weighed a half a pound that might work

No argument from me.

Though to be fair, I believe the original idea was to throw it to cause a distraction, enabling you to do damage with a more significant weapon.

Like other things, the movies have exaggerated their capabilities.

Per Wikipedia

A shuriken (Japanese: ???; literally: "hidden hand blade") is a Japanese concealed weapon that was used as a hidden dagger or metsubushi to distract or misdirect.
They are also known as throwing stars, or ninja stars, although they were originally designed in many different shapes. Contrary to this nomenclature, the shuriken (ninja stars)[citation needed] were not in the arsenal of those who practised ninjutsu. Modern movies and tales portray ninjas using shuriken, but they were mainly used by samurai and ashigaru soldiers.[citation needed] The major varieties of shuriken are the bo shuriken (????, stick shuriken) and the hira shuriken (????, flat shuriken) or shaken (??, wheel shuriken, also read as kurumaken).
Shuriken were supplementary weapons to the sword or various other weapons in a samurai's arsenal, although they often had an important tactical effect in battle.[1][better source needed] The art of wielding the shuriken is known as shurikenjutsu[citation needed] and was taught as a minor part of the martial arts curriculum of many famous schools, such as Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu, Itto-ryu, Kukishin-ryu, and Togakure-ryu

They are illegal in CA

Part of the same comprehensive Ninja control scheme that also banned nunchucks, saps and spiked gloves.

Legal in Kentucky.  Specifically mentioned as being legal for CCDW, along with nunchuks.

Manriki gusari is way dumber. It's a short sword or axe like hand weapon with a chain on the shaft. You're supposed to throw the chain around your enemy, tangling him up, then poke him with the sword end

A lot of the chain type weapons are made to disable a sword or even break the blade. Period katanas are not the strongest steel.

If you're bothered by the misrepresentation of feudal japanese weapons in movies just remember how contemporary firearms are represented in entertainment. It's entertainment where their use is dictated by a group of people with no idea what they were for or capable of but they'll make it look cool.

FWIW historically shuriken were distraction devices. Think like a flashbang. I'm sure those using them may have been proficient enough to be fairly accurate at short range so they'd hurt but the purpose was more so they or a buddy could layer an attack with something more effective.

The rest of the asian martial arts weapons we see in movies were not well represented historically. They're things that gained traction in modern recreational martial arts then ported over to movies as if they were widely used historically. All the weapons that look like agricultural tool derivatives were just that. Agriculture tools pressed into use as improvised arms. Not things carried into battle by organized soldiers. The bulk of archaic weapons from the bronze age to the dawn of firearms were pretty universal the world over. Long sticks with pointy ends, bows, and swords for the elite. Everything else was basically the equivalent of parsley on the plate.

close.  targets were major muscle groups (thighs, pecs) to degrade an opponent's ability to fight.  secondary benefits were distraction and anti-pursuit.  i read an essay by one of the last practitioners of a very old school (names escape me), who was bemused by movie representations of shuriken.

samurai fought dirty.  their attitude was very similar to contemporary military attitudes: if you're in a fair fight, you planned badly.

Not if you actually know how to use them.

They are weapon/limb catchers, so, if you know how to use a Sai properly, you can catch a weapon/limb, lock it up, then counter attack. You don’t stab with them; the hilts are used for punching.

Think of them as a Main Gauche in each hand that can be used offensively.

Not legal to possess in public, but arguably legal to keep at home.  I own several of them.

BTW the California code that generally bans them has exceptions for martial arts instructors.

I lusted after throwing stars back in the '80s, think it was a Philly shop who advertised in the martial arts magazines.  Not sure  I ever thought it through to the point of figuring out which occasions they were best suited for.  Probably a drunken party, and someone else's wall.  Never did buy any of Chuck Norris's gusseted kicking jeans either.

I do have a grappling hook.  When I moved from NJ to CO, a climbing partner surprised me with one as a departure gift.  I had a habit of encouraging his uncertainty when he was leading by yelling supportively, "Throw the grappling hook!"  Cool guy, Lenni Lenape descendant and a longtime Atlantic Highlands family, but lost touch.

Throwing knives, okay, there is a target in my yard.  One of my daughters really got into that for a while.

Back when I was a wee lil Tenderfoot, one of the oldest young men in the troop politely asked me to stand tall in front of this tree. He throws two Chinese stars that stick into the tree above my head. I figured this is the initiation ritual so I’m just going along with it.
Just as he throws a 3rd one, a scoutmaster happened to walk out the door and see it flying.

That was his last time at Boy Scouts. He’s a bail bondsman now.

File Shuriken next to Caltrops or The crude smoke/flash bombs that were used by the historical Ninja. They were used to cover their escape or as a distraction during combat.

Ninja also did not wear black uniforms that scream “I am a ninja!”. Disguise and stealth were the mainstay, not dead giveaways.

Stars aren't for everybody OP.  It takes strong, quick upper body strength to become proficient and deadly.

I know they're not ninja weapons but You might be better off trying boomerangs. Much easier to score a hit when targets are close though.. I can zing em like flying lawn mower blades.

The Manriki Gusari is dumb but it's like pistol braces.  It exists because of weapon laws that prohibited carrying swords.   Lots of martial arts melee weapons are former farm implements.
