Not if you actually know how to use them.

They are weapon/limb catchers, so, if you know how to use a Sai properly, you can catch a weapon/limb, lock it up, then counter attack. You don’t stab with them; the hilts are used for punching.

Think of them as a Main Gauche in each hand that can be used offensively.

Back in my teens and 20's I used to practice with them. I was about 80% at hitting a plying card @ 30ft.

Also once you learn one of the proper methods to throw you can penetrate right through hollow core doors and embed in the far wall/surface.

Of the tonki I also found the bag which the bottom releases and drops a dozen sharpened kaltrops to be cruelly effective.

Sandals, flip flops, deck shoes, "tennis shoes", "basketball shoes", and most running/track shoes would offer no safe protection.

After I had the option to CCW, all that went into a box long forgotten.

They are illegal in CA

Part of the same comprehensive Ninja control scheme that also banned nunchucks, saps and spiked gloves.

Fun fact, the throwing technique for the stick shuriken also works with certain sized construction stakes.

The more you know...

That was my favorite one when I was a kid.

Was it as bad in the 80s as it is now?

Knew a kid like that in HS. His thing was those nutchuckas.

Yes, I spelled it correctly....saw him smack his nuts twice while he channeled Bruce Lee.

I always considered them a more reliable throwing knife.

Someone brought up Asian martial arts, you folks should really check out the HEMA guys. The knights were no slouches in the martial combat arena, and not just aimlessly bashing each other with pointy metal.

When I was a kid, my neighbor friend's dad had a full shop, so by the age of 10, we could both run a mill and lathe, were pretty good with a cutting torch, and decent welders, though most of our "projects" were done in secret while our parents were at work.

One summer after TMNT came out, we made the full arsenal. The throwing stars were the straw that broke the camel's back though...so we were banned from making "ninja" weapons. Apparently that included black powder cannons as well...

RMJ made some nice ones

I'll agree that throwing stars are mostly useless however, SAI can be quite deadly and very effective against other handheld (non firearm) weapons.

If you know how to properly use them

Always was funny seeing those tiny ninja stars doing so much damage in the movies, now if they made them 12 inches across and they weighed a half a pound that might work

I assumed you were talking about girls at first.

And then I realized that ninja stars and girls are probably mutually exclusive hobbies at the age of 16.
