So, according to that article, the Titanic was going really fast because they had to shovel the burning coal into the "furnace" really fast to fight the fire...

The Titanic Was on Fire for Days Before It Sank

However, despite the century that has passed, the Titanic story is still evolving. Everyone knows the base story about the ship hitting an iceberg, but one major piece missing for years has recently come to light. The Titanic was on fire for days as it was sailing, possibly longer than that. There was a coal fire below deck for days that the crew was unable to put out. The ship sailed along anyway with a fire burning in the hull.

All I really know is Texas lignite, so this may not apply, but that shit smolders in the stock pile. It was probably not unusual to have hot spots in the fuel bunkers of those ships.

Nah....I say if you have the means to get to it, one should be able to take whatever they want.  No different than scuba diving/snorkeling/magnet fishing at the local lake/boat ramp/marina and keeping your haul.

Very interesting article. I had never heard about that
https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/01/06/coal-fire-sink-the-titanic/

Titanic: The New Evidence does not provide as much new evidence as the title may suggest, but it does bring together various alternative theories about the cause of the Titanic’s demise into an entertaining, if not compelling, single narrative. The question ultimately comes down to this: Would it have sunk anyway, or does the ship’s sinking actually require the coal fire as an integral part of that process. Not everyone agrees on the answer.

Speaking to the New York Times about this new narrative, former honorary secretary of the British Titanic Society David Hill, said this:

When the Titanic hit the iceberg close to midnight on April 14, 1912, it created a 300-foot-long line of damage on the starboard section of the hull, including punctures and gashes, that opened up too many compartments to the sea, so that the weight of the water dragged the bow down so low that the ship eventually sank […]

A fire may have accelerated this. But in my view, the Titanic would have sunk anyways.

Whether the coal fire played a role in both the speed and the structural failure of the Titanic prior to its collision, or whether both mechanisms are needed in concert (or at all) remains an open debate.

That there was a smoldering coal fire on board even before the Titanic’s maiden voyage, regardless of its contribution to the disaster, however, is a remarkable bit of trivia in its own right.

The coal fire was well known even back then. Coal fires were common, Titanic's fire was known before leaving on its maiden voyage, and it was discussed during the formal investigation and even then was found to have had no affect on the performance of the ship. Interestingly, it may have actually bought the ship time in its final hours. The coal where the fire was smoldering was moved to the port side of the ship to put it out (which it was put out the day of the sinking). This gave the Titanic a 3 degree list to port, which was noticed by many passengers. It was that 3 degree list that counteracted the starboard list that started to develop during the sinking because of the water rushing into the starboard side of the ship. The Britannic and Lusitania both capsized when they sunk; Titanic did not thanks to the transfer of the coal to the port side.

BTW, the "burn mark" in that photo has been shown to be merely a smudge on the camera lens. No other photos from different cameras show that mark on the ship.  It was also in the wrong position to the location of the coal fire.

In short, the coal fire was a big nothing-burger.

Here's a very good podcast on this topic:

The "dark spot" on the hull where the coal fire was is well above the area damaged by the iceberg. The iceberg damaged hull plates just above the bilge keel which is well below the waterline. If there was a coal fire it was not in the same area as the hull damage from the iceberg.

I found the info that private individuals can't take items from the Titanic interesting and wanted to know the backstory.  Well here it is:
https://www.thejournal.ie/who-owns-the-titanic-and-who-can-dive-at-the-wreck-404369-Apr2012/

Cliff's notes: Basically only applies to U.S. citizens.  A group from Mexico, UK, Brazil or wherever, as long as they are not U.S. citizens can take all the items they want from the Titanic itself.  Bankrolling a dive that deep will not be cheap so I don't think a weekend treasure hunter will be doing a trip to recover stuff from the ship.  See below

However, in the case of Titanic, the company that dived on her and has recovered artefacts, RMS Titanic Inc, has made a legal claim as salvor-in-possession. [The resulting restrictions] only apply to US law and US citizens,” he added. “So, for example, if I was to sail out of the port of South Hampton with a dive recovery vessel, I could dive and retrieve any artefacts  I care for from the vessel and no one could do anything about it.”

Ok I didn’t know that.
From the show that examined the claim, the ships speed was only indirectly because of the amount of coal being used. According to the show, they were shoveling so much coal into the furnaces to try to get the bunker down to where the fire was and get it extinguished that at a more normal speed they ran the risk of running out of fuel before they reached their destination. It was thought the coal was being burned anyway, might as well make use of it and try to make port before they ran out.

Rummage around your parlor stove coal bin for these:

Thanks OP, I just ordered a keyring with some coal recovered from the wreck. It'll go well with my little chunk of the Berlin Wall

As I understand it, these coal fires were not uncommon.  Even if such existed in Titanic, it played no part in her sinking.

ETA: from all accounts, the breaching of the Titanic's hull began far forward of the alleged coal fire.  IOW, the alleged coal fire had nothing to do with the Titanic's hull being breached, nor with the vessel sinking.

I watched the documentary, and it had eye witness accounts from a coal stoker that was there (he made his comments during the inquiry).

The documentary doesn't say that the ship would NOT have sunk. What it says....the steel was weakened by the fire. As the bulkheads filled with water, the weakened bulkhead BURST (again the coal stoker saw the bulkhead give). So instead.of the water making it to the top of the bulkhead before spilling, it gushed water from the bottom section. Causing the ship to sink faster. The timelines mentioned was the difference between most living and what actually occurred....
