3.138.255.236 is arfcoms ip, what does that mean?

Imagine a big road map, arfcom is located at the 3rd left turn, then the 138th right turn, then the 255th left turn, then the 236th right turn. Sense you cant always remember this arfcom pays a company/dns service to put a sign at every turn you need to make. Basically you just drive down the road until you see the sign that says turn here, you keep doing this until you get here. The sign company was/is godaddy.

Godaddy decided to take all the signs down, arfcom was still here but you did not know how to get here, because you did not know where to turn.

That was because the security stuff was not updated yet. Basically what that means is once you get here your car checks its gps to make sure your at the right place, well the gps did not know the physical address because it was not updated yet, so the car said "are you sure this is where".

Well we are the right wing militia, at least thats what they say. According to Goatboy ( thread in team ) they said the site was allowing illegal stuff. There is probably a line in the contract with godaddy that says they can take the street signs down at will if they think something illegal is going on. Basically it can be their "we will do as we please" card.

FFS, the easiest way to describe it to the boomers is this.

DNS is like a fucking phone book... or if you remember dialing 411 for information.
In the following example, I give you a real world comparison between calling 411 for information... and a PC making a DNS Request. Parenthesis is what your Computer does, Not in parenthesis is the phone metaphor.

So imagine you know the name of a business (name of a website) so you dial 411 (your PC reaches out to Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8). You (your Computer) asks the operator for the number for the business (asks the DNS Server for the IP Address for the website). You now know that AR15 Emporium's phone number is 555-777-8787 (Your PC now knows that AR15.com's IP address is 3.138.255.236). You dial the number (your PC then routes your traffic to that IP Address) and you reach the business  (reach the Server)

Without 411 (without DNS) you would have to memorize the Phone number (you would have you memorize the IP Address).

You don't want to call 411 all the time (You dont want to have to resolve to a DNS Server first all the time) because it slow things down (Same)... so you write down the number on an etch and sketch (computer stores the IP address and hostname association in its DNS Cache).

Perhaps you think your Operator is an asshole (Perhaps you dont trust the DNS Server) because they might take down that company's listing (DNS Entry) ... so you enter the phone number (enter the IP Address) into speed dial (into a hostfile). Now finding that phone number is at an instant push of a button (now that IP address can be resolved instantly on your own computer)

When I put that IP in I get ar15-backup.com, not ar15.com

I usually explain it as a phone book. You know John Smiths name but not his number. You lookup up the name in the phone book and then find his number to call. DNS is the phone book.

It can’t fuck anything up. If you change it, make sure you remember what it used to be. If things stop working then just change it back.

I believe you can change it from somewhere within your network and sharing center settings if you’re running windows.

GoDaddy 'owns' the IP address for the ar15.com domain (possibly the whole class A namespace for the 3.x.x.x network - or a supernet within that namespace), but they don't control DNS or how those IP addresses get cached in multiple locations. I don't use google as my primary DNS. You can change it to whatever you want it to be. In my case, I do my own DNS resolution via pihole, which uses OpenDNS, Quad9, Level3 and others as the upstream DNS.

Can there be a coordinated effort to block a domain from access? Sure. GoDaddy could certainly decide to renege on the domain registration, and update their DNS zone files. Barring a failure of ar15.com to comply with Terms of Service could allow that action to happen.

Much more likely is that google's DNS zone file update had a problem and a zone file got nuked.

I've added google back into my upstream, let's see what happens.
