I was today years old when I learned that US army squads in WW2 who got hit hard and retreated back to the trench line or to the fire base were executed on the spot as deserters.

Russians historically had really bad performance conducting deliberate attacks without a whole lot of artillery.
They generally fought well on defense because it was basically stay in your hole and die in place or face the NKVD. This is why. After the war ended in 1945, a whole lot of Russian POWs went to Siberia and a whole lot of officer POWs were mostly shot. I can see both sides of this issue, but really if the Ukrainians had stopped doing prisoner exchanges and simply refused to send Russian POWs back, then the natural process would be mass surrendering. I suspect the number of Ukrainian POWs returned is less then the Ukrainian KIAs lost because the Russians see no way out. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised to see these Russian POWs get US visas. They'd make great democrats. |
