I've jumped out of a vehicle doing 5mph and landed on my feet.  So it's definitely possible to do it at 50mph!

It was an SR-71.  One died the other survived.  A little bruised up but essentially unhurt.

An SR-71 ejection at design cruise would be in no way comparable to ejection from a scramjet vehicle.  Design Q for scramjets is on the order of 2x the dynamic pressure of SR-71 ops, and 5x the thermal energy.

Max Q ejection envelopes for US aircraft typically state NTE 500-600KEAS. 1000-1200 psf.

The SR-71 flight envelope was basically NTE 450KEAS.  Lower dynamic pressures, but much, much higher thermal stagnation temperatures than a fighter pilot would ever see.  The decel from 800F to 150F stagnation, that would be a worrisome transient.  I don't know what the manual says about egress.  A crew has had an aircraft breakup up near design cruise, and at least one crewmember survived, but beyond that, I don't recall.

Charts for reference...

I'm not sure why he goes back to Miramar since Top Gun hasn't been there in years, 1996 or so.   It was moved to  Fallon, NV. Miramar is a Marine Corp base now.
I think Coronado was mentioned in it also which doesn't have anything to do with Aviation but It's right beside NAS North Island which doesn't have any fighter squadrons.
The movie wants you to think North Island is Miramar and Top Gun is still there.
And is the Miramar Officers club supposed to be at the beach? It's actually a good drive to the ocean from Miramar.
Just my nit picking.....

Tom Cruise sure loves close-in shots of his face. There are A LOT of them in that movie.

He doesn't.

He gets sent to NAS North Island, and they explicitly say so.  There's no implication that it is Miramar.

i only seen it once when it first came out but I thought he was sent to Fighter town USA which was Miramar.
Why does he go to North Island? I had thought they said Coronado.
Any way he wouldn't be going anywhere In San Diego.  If anywhere in California it would've been Lemoore. It would've been more believable

Bill Weaver was thrown out of an SR71 at Mach 3 and survived, mission specialist did not.  Capsule ejection system would work just fine it get people back from space.  Having said that it’s a movie, enjoy

They had to build a bar on the beach in Coronado just for the movie.

Exactly.

I’ve often said that parts of this movie are like something I would have written. The scenes involving the beach are like my personal reimagining of some anecdotes I’ve heard from Navy personnel. Stories that involve people getting thrown around on concrete.

Things look and feel completely different when people are being thrown around on a beach as opposed to concrete. It all seems much more playful, innocent and friendly. Maverick gets thrown out of a bar onto a concrete parking lot...
