UCI starts the year late and ends the year late. Graduation is in mid June.
The vast majority of students there don't give a shit, but with a student population 33,000 then it doesn't take much to get a small group of protestors.

One of the articles I read interviewed one of the protesters who said he was not a student there, so there are absolutely non-students protesting. There are probably a lot of students protesting too, however. When I was there there were protests quite often near the administration building, sometimes for Israel, sometimes against Israel, always annoying with most people ignoring them.
UCI is a commuter school, so there just is not much of student culture there.
