Went to see the battleship USS North Carolina today and had a question about the main guns.

They are 16in 45 caliber guns.  Someone please explain the 45 caliber I can not compute

That means the barrel is 45 calibers long. Ie, 16" x 45. Or, 60 ft.

I bought a piece of the old decking not long ago.

In big naval guns, "caliber" defines the length of the barrel in multiples of the bore.  So a 16-inch 45 caliber guns the barrel is 45x16 inches, or 60 feet long.

By comparison the Iowa class battleships used 16-inch 50 caliber guns, which had barrels 66 feet long.

So a 308 in 45 caliber would be 13.86" long

Yes. In the marine compartment. I was tempted to ask where they stored the crayons but I didn't

Shame they can't keep these old ships sea worthy and actually take them out on cruises. Get out on open water and let loose a Salvo

Caliber in naval guns is a measure of barrel length.

16"45 caliber guns have 45 x 16" = 720" barrels (60').

The Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club has restored the original radios in one of the seven radio rooms.  If you are a licensed amateur and know morse code you can operate from the USS North Carolina using the restored radios.  If you don't know code (like me), they have a modern radio you can operate.  The restored radios are in a part of the ship that isn't open to the public.  It's not that far from where the torpedo hit.

She's a beautiful ship.  I haven't been in many years, but I have donated money.

There were plans to tow her to Philadelphia Navy Yard (?) for hull repairs.

Anyone know if they changed their minds or did the repairs in place?

Philly yard has been closed for decades.  The drydocks are in private hands and the berths are used for inactive reserve ships only.

They are building a cofferdam around the ship to create a dry dock. Repairs will be done from there.

I am planning on going to Mobile next year to see the USS Alabama. As much of a history nut as I am, I have yet to set foot on a battleship. I am actually on a battleship reading binge right now. I wonder how awesome a 16in anti aircraft shell would have been? The Japanese had them for their Yamato class 18.1in. My last battleship book was about the USS Tennessee. I wish they could have saved her.

The real question is if anyone makes a 1911 with a 45 caliber barrel.

(I'm not saying it would be practical)
Maybe add a stock and SRB it.
Or better yet, a brace.

USS Alabama in Mobile. I spent a couple weeks in Boy Scouts renovating it after they filed Under Siege on it. It's part of the South Dakota class of Fast Battleships that came after the two North Carolina Class.

The Philly yard was a ???, I wasn't sure it was still in operation.

So have they started the coffer dam?  I'd love to see it dry.

I understand that over the years it has settled into the mud.  What a mess
