Happened back in December.

"A United Airlines flight dove 1,400 feet in under a minute shortly after taking off from Hawaii   and came within just 775 feet of the Pacific Ocean en route to San Francisco. Flight 1722 took off from Kahului Airport in Maui at 2:49 p.m. Dec. 18 during stormy weather and reached an altitude of about 2,200 feet before taking the terrifying plunge, the Air Current reported, citing data from FlightRadar24.
No one was injured during the incident, which has not been previously reported. The Boeing 777-200 reached a descent rate of almost 8,600 feet per minute before the crew regained control when the plane was a mere 775 feet above the water, according to the outlet."

Pilots better hope there was documented weather that could have caused that.

Pilot flying should have been on instruments but both should have noticed the rapid  loss of positive rate. If they didn't, their passengers sure fucking did lol.

Being blown out of the air is one thing. You’re there then not.
The feeling of falling down an elevator shaft for minutes until you’re gone is another. You know what’s happening and know there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Terrible

How can you lose situational awareness like that? Most of these planes “fly themselves”. Wouldn’t alarms be screaming “we are going down when we should be ping up” or something?

That’s really bad…

I’m a helo guy not an airplane guy, subscribed to see if our airline friends have any insight beyond just the typical spatial D type stuff.

I don't think it was awareness, I think it was downdraft.

They were at -8600 feet per minute from 2200 feet.  They weren't feeling it for minutes no matter what.

And it happened over a month ago. And nobody onboard said a word about it at the time. No vertical video. No tweets. No interviews at the destination from panicked passengers.

Three G’s is no shit. People don’t just roll with it like light turbulence.

Why didn’t anyone say anything?

Spitballing here… Did they accidentally spin the baro knob instead of the heading or altitude knob? That might have given a false altimeter reading to ADS-B.

From the original article:

A spokesman for United confirmed the incident and said after landing at SFO, a formal internal safety report was filed by the pilots and the aircraft was inspected before its next flight. “??United then closely coordinated with the FAA and ALPA on an investigation that ultimately resulted in the pilots receiving additional training. Safety remains our highest priority,” the spokesman said. After publication United told TAC that the incident was not related to any fault with the aircraft.

The FAA in a statement said the United flight crew reported the incident to the FAA as part of its voluntary safety reporting program. A spokesman said, “The agency reviewed the incident and took appropriate action” without elaborating.

The United spokesman added that the pilots “fully cooperated with the investigation and their training program is ongoing.” The pilots involved had a combined 25,000 hours of total flying time, but the airline declined to say which crew member was flying at the time and how much of that experience was on the 777 for each member of the flight crew.

Anyone know if the 777 has an MCAS system like like 737 Max?

I saw a 777 Capt in a You Tube post, said something to the effect of "this looks like a stall upon slat retraction during climbout......the margin is only 5kts".

I know we have some Airline Captains here, would like to know their thoughts.  Maybe another MCAS type scenario?

Misses and I flew back from our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta in a terrible lightning/thunder storm.

Out of nowhere, the lights cuts off in the cabin and the plane suddenly “dropped” (for lack of a better term) for just a second. Then everything went back to normal.

I sprayed shit all over myself and my new bride. That’s how I know she really loves me!

TheFlightChannel on YT recreates airline incidents using the latest Flight Simulator and the public data from the crashes including cockpit recordings and audio from flights.  Its mind boggling how many of those involve pilots who seem to have no idea they are rapidly descending or ignoring audio warnings due to be totally focused on something else.

FPM, not FPS.  Still quite a decent rate, but but not faster than a speeding bullet.

Passenger onboard terrifying United Airlines flight that nose-dived 1,400ft during epic storm describes people 'screaming' as plane came within FIVE SECONDS of hitting Pacific Ocean: 'You’re gripping the seat and praying under your breath'

Providing his personal account of the experience - which went unreported until this week - the father-of-two told CNN he initially thought the turbulence was normal, but as other passengers' screams became more pronounced, he soon realized something was wrong.

'It felt like you were climbing to the top of a roller coaster,' Williams said, telling the outlet the he noticed the plane had dipped at a ‘concerning rate’ for several seconds.

'It was at that point,' he said.

It was at this point, Williams said, that passengers who at first tried to remain calm began to panic.

'There were a number of screams on the plane,' the Columbus, Ohio, realtor recalled. 'Everybody knew that something was out of the ordinary, or at least that this was not normal.'

Still, the dutiful dad - scared-stiff himself - tried to keep his cool in the presence of his wide and children.

'You’re trying your best to maintain your composure – there’s obviously kids on the flight. nobody really knows what’s going on,' Williams said, before adding, 'but at the same time, you’re concerned. You don’t know if this is an issue.'

'It was certainly out of the ordinary.'

About ten minutes later, and there was an announcement that assured the passengers the event had passed.

'Someone from the cockpit got on the intercom and said, "Alright, folks, you probably felt a couple G’s on that one, but everything’s gonna be OK,' said Williams, who is the first passenger to provide a personal account of the incident.

'"We’re gonna be alright,"' Williams credited the United staffer saying.
