Incredible imagery! But they aren't moving. Will they look as realistic when trying to copy human movements?

The lips when they're talking are always a dead giveaway.  Somehow, after all these years, CGI artists still can't get that right.

I was out of gaming for a while. Picked up a PS4 for the Last of Us. Had a few friends show up during the first bit of the game. Granted they may have had a few drinks, but asked what movie I was watching. Then I picked up Horizon Zero Dawn. Graphics are getting unreal (or almost real?). I can see a time where movies are to books, now, as video games are to movies in the near future. When the graphics get near par who is going to want to experience a fixed story over an interactive one?

The funny thing is we've had demos similar in the past of look at what we can do and they never follow through.
The closest we've gotten and they quickly highlighted it was Hellblade: Senua's Sacrafice.  If you can play it on a high end rig, the character modeling looks AMAZINGLY real.
So the truth is we are are definitely close, we just need studios to step up their game.

What is going to get really strange is playing a war type VR game where the graphics and characters are life like that have a full range of human emotions. I am not sure the human psyche is going to be able to handle it. We may very well see gamers with PTSD, and a host of other mental disorders associated with it because their brains can't differentiate between reality and virtual reality.

This. They always have horse mouth. It also seems like they have minor issues with collision detection on clothing and weaponry. The clip of the chick from rogue one, her right collar clips through her body. Still incredible what they've done in even 5 years. I'd love to see Fallout 1 and 2 remade with this engine.

I'd say it's going the other way. Generations grown up with the likes of beheadings and what not in 4k. And spends half a day playing FPS in near real life representation. Numb. Numb. Numb. The scariest, most fucked up movies of my youth hold nothing aganist a casual browse of LiveLeak. Which ain't much of a difference with a hardcore FPS. I'm only in my 30s.

The shit my parents generation complained about the youth consuming, ain't got shit on what 10s on LiveLeak will give you.

That would be interesting... I’m replaying “rage” again and the thought of being charged with a realistic bandit is exciting and terrifying.

Sounds just like "Project Brainstorm"

Brainstorm (1983) [Trailer]

Brainstorm (1983 film)

Brainstorm is an American 1983 science fiction film directed by Douglas Trumbull, and starring Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood (in her final film role), Louise Fletcher and Cliff Robertson.

It follows a research team's efforts to perfect a system that directly records the sensory and emotional feelings of a subject, and the efforts by the company's management to exploit the device for military ends.

Not bad.

If you have seen the new Avengers movie I have to give props to the team that brought Thanos to life.

I've got a pretty good eye for bad CGI, but there are some scenes that Thanos looked like a real purple person... literally flawless skin texture. I don't think I've seen something that's not real look so real.

The gamer would still know it is not real though, and that they are not personally in danger, nor that they did anything morally wrong since it's just a game(of course that's could brings up moral issues in a different sense), and they also know that nobody was actually hurt.  But in the same way that seeing a scary movie could be scary or in some sense traumatizing to a child, I would be that this stuff could emotionally impact or even harm a person who wasn't mature enough to handle it.  Like if you have a 6 year old put on your V.R. headset and end up experiencing some awful graphic battle or horror scenario or something.  Hmm yeah, rated M for mature could take on all new meaning with such real CGI and VR coming about.

Wouldn't it though! Imagine all those self important blowhards having their notoriety stripped away by CGI, I like the idea.

Think the computer characters will engage in politics, environmental issues, immigration, etc? I bet the programmers will see to it that they do, can't silence the propaganda machine.
