When I came back one time from a tour overseas, I literally got to the states, got my leave papers at the base, got in my car and drove home. When I got into West Virginia I had a county sheriff pull me over for an expired inspection sticker (It had expired the month before). I showed him my leave papers, explained that I had been stationed overseas for nearly a year and told him I planned on having the inspection done that day or the next.  He didn't give a shit. Still gave me the ticket. That stung, and still stings to this day.

I've never met anyone in foreign countries that had such chickenshit rudeness & juvenile dick measuring with American servicemen as most LEOS in the Norfolk/Arlington/DC area.

My truck failed the VA "safety inspection" because one of the tag lights was burned out. How is a burned out tag light a safety issue? Am I going to cause an accident because my tag is slightly less easy to read at night?

Really all it takes is a lap around the beltway to see. Maryland cars are some of the most poorly maintained vehicles in the country.

I'm not defending the government money grab, but I'm perfectly fine with having to have my vehicle inspected annually.

I'm not the problem. I maintain my equipment. The problem is people who do not maintain their vehicle and it has a catastrophic failure due to neglect.

You have to pass tech inspection to use your vehicle on a race track. You need to do pre flight inspections and preventative maintenance on aircraft. You should have your vehicle inspected regularly to make sure it's road worthy.

Driving is not a right. There are vehicle standards for using public roads. If your busted vehicle does not meet basic safety standards like having properly functioning lighting, brakes, suspension, and tires, it doesn't belong on the road.

I've had problems with VA inspections in the past.

GF just had it with her little GTI.

Shop owner called and said she failed due to headlight adjustment and that it was $45 to fix. She refused and showed up within 5 mins (was across the street at grocery).

When she arrived and was told they did the service without her consent she said she wouldn't pay it.

To which the guy replied, "well what would you be willing to pay?"

After a moment of silence in dis-belief, he nervously said that it's ok, don't worry about paying.

I get the feeling this scam opens the doors up to a lot of this sort of thing and apparently abuses by the sanctioning-end as well.

I gave my old del sol to my dad as a project car.  He took it in for inspection here in VA and they failed it because the SRS light was on, which we knew about beforehand.  They wanted a ridiculous amount of money to fix it.  Dad tells them no and to go ahead and put the fail sticker on which I believe gives 2 weeks to get the car fixed before re-inspection.  Picks it up and magically the SRS light is off.  Looks like they went ahead and disabled or reset it before making the phone call for money.  Oops.

The name of the shop is Integrity Auto.

And you are aware that the average person has zero concept of what needs to be done to keep a machine in proper working order? A lot of good a fix it ticket will do after someone's brakes they neglected for 10k miles fails. Or the tire they drove to the cords separated from the sidewall on the freeway and they spun the car.

The average person is an idiot who will wait for their vehicle to fail before they do anything about it. I've seen it repeatedly.

Probably. Distracted driving is on par with drunk driving. Doesn't make driving a car with steering components that are about to fail a good idea though.

Same goes for the enumerated "right" to keep and bear arms...walk around OCing without a permit in certain locales and watch what that "right" gets you.  Doesn't negate the fact that it's still a right.

The facts do not back up your claims. If there was ANY validity to your claims the accident rates in non-inspection states would be far higher, and that is not happening.

I used to live in a state where LE could not enter the parking lots and ticket people unless the owner gave them permission.

We used that a time or two with the 3 wheelers.  Just stop in the parking lot of the little store and buy a couple sodas and some crackers and cheese/candy bar and sit on the bench outside and wave at the cops (they were sitting in the parking lot of the local doctor's office waiting on us to leave.  The store owner told us that they had told the cops to stay off their property unless they were coming in to buy something.  The ATV folks bought a lot of gas and food/drinks at the store before going on a ride, so the store owner was protecting their customers.

When the drinks/snacks were gone my brother-in-law would call his wife, she'd bring the pickup truck down and we'd load the 3 wheelers in the truck, wave at the cops and ride home.

Evidently, down here, the cops could have just come onto the business owner's property and wrote us tickets.

Back when I was in high school and Oklahoma had inspections, we would go down to the muffler shop.  We'd hand the old man a $5 bill and he handed us the sticker and scraper.  He'd holler "I want that (scraper) back" as we head out to "inspect".

Go live somewhere they don't do it. People driving around with fogged out headlights, bald tires, and brakes that are down to the metal backers.

People don't maintain their shit and it's a hazard to other drivers.

Good shoot ticket.

Inspections are fucking bullshit.  And plenty here defend them.

I live in KS, a state with no regular vehicle inspections. I live about 8 miles from Missouri, a state with biannual "safety" inspections. With very little exception, most of the cars that I see with actual safety violations have MO plates, with current inspection stickers.

My truck failed the VA "safety inspection" because one of the tag lights was burned out. How is a burned out tag light a safety issue? Am I going to cause an accident because my tag is slightly less easy to read at night?

If you have 2 tag lights, and one is burned out, it's a violation. The working light could be a 1.21-gigawatt frickin' laser beam, but because you have a burned out bulb, it's a violation. Stoopit.

I don't care what the "average person's" conception of vehicle maintenance is. If they want to drive a car that's falling apart that's their problem, not mine. Furthermore, inspections don't solve that problem; you know as well as I do that it isn't hard to find a lax inspection station if you want to.

You're in favor of government force being used to ensure compliance with the rules and regulations you like. Don't be afraid to speak the truth - God knows the majority of people share your view.

The fact that the General Assembly had to even waste time and paper to clarify this issue is deplorable.

So feel free to build a car in your garage and take it on public roads unlicensed. See how far that "right" gets you.

Owing that car and doing what you want on your own property is different.

Driving is not a right.

This is government/state/authoritarian perpetuated bullshit right here.

So you're fine with state gun inspections, as long as it only applies if you're taking it with you on public property?
