What years?

For relatives in southern VT,

Brattleboro was one of those towns people would drive an hour to go to to shop, see a movie, go to a McDonald’s, etc.
Or a Dunkin’ Donuts -back when they were baking the donuts fresh in the back.
The movies were old theatre used to do plays kind of set up that converted to one screen/show movie theatres.
There was a huge sporting goods store people would go to also.
It was a big deal.

When I was real little I remember being with some cousins one summer and seeing a Disney movie at one of them,
When I was in HS I was at some other cousins and we went and saw The Terminator at the other one.

This was 70s/80s.
Bennington would have been another one.
Not sure if that had an old downtown or not.

I have been up and down I91 many a time.
As well as 87, 89,93, 95.
And the smaller routes.
Still many a town with lots of dirt roads and no cell service up there.

I haven’t been to  upstate NY, VT/NH /ME , Quebec, etc. in about a decade.

From what I’m reading and watching on YouTube, it looks like bitter cold and anywhere from 40-150” of snow depending on location. Sounds like a lot of work , wood and chapped skin for this southerner.

Summers are miserable here in the piedmont, and where I live, you always have to watch where you walk, even in your own yard. I got nailed by a copperhead last week, but fortunately, it was a dry bite. Not much happened.

I still remember when a timber rattler was spotted in MA. It made the news.

IMHO, too damn warm. I prefer cold. It is rare to have it in the teens.

To be quite honest, this thread has been such an eye opener for me, I'm not so sure the NE is for my family. Sounds like I should visit, but not live there. Just too expensive, cold and liberal. I've lived in TX for 42 years, and not sure I'd wanna spend the later years in life with 6-7 months of harsh winter. This has been a valuable thread of information.

One of the best things in the world is sitting out in your garage listening to the snow fall while smoking a cigar and drinking a fine rum. The sound of snow falling is one of the most peaceful sounds in the world. Then, when you're all cold, you go inside and stand next to your wood burning stove to warm up. Then, when you get too hot because your wife likes the house to be 80+ degrees, you put on a t-shirt, shorts, and your boots, and then go outside and stand in the wind and falling snow to cool off. The sound of snowflakes hissing as they land on your 200 degree arms is also peaceful.

Nice. I've always thought NC would be the best of both worlds. Not too cold winters, not too hot summers, have mountains in the west and beach to the east.

I've always thought NC would be a great middle ground, weather-wise.   Nice state, nice people.    OTOH, a NH friend moved down there, lived a couple years, moved to Maine.  He said the summers were like our winters in reverse - so damn hot he had to stay huddled in A/C surroundings half the year.   I guess part of it is whether cold or hot is harder for you to take.   For me, hot is worse - you can only take off so many clothes, then you're still stifling hot even if you're nude.   Cold, OTOH, just put on more clothes or work harder.   Working out in the woods in the winter is exhilarating.   When it's cold out, you may not feel like leaving the heater behind, but once you get outside and start doing physical work, you don't even notice the cold.

A "Once Great" state, unfortunately. So where do I start?

Born and raised. Lived all over the state, but mostly grew up in Burlington area, as that is where my mom is from. My dad was from Norwich. I have family in Essex and St Albans. My dad is buried in the veteran's cemetery in Rutland. So I grew up mostly in Burlington, I was a member of the VT National Guard, and I attended UVM for a year before I went on active duty.

In the 80s it was an awesome, sort of a live and let live place. Hell, I used to hike Camels Hump as a 15 year old kid with my Marlin .22 rifle. My buddy carried an M1 carbine. We'd go off the trail as set up "live fire" lanes practicing "react to contact drills" that we read in the Ranger Handbook. Super 2A friendly place. My high school experience was like an 80s movie. Good kids out to have a good time, little to no hard drugs. Kids would keep deer rifles in their cars to hunt after school.

Traditionally VT has been Republican believe it or not. Probably now what we would recognize more as "Independents" or even Libertarians. But starting in 70 and 80s the "progressive" AKA socialist commies from NYC came in and fucking ruined the place. This would be the Ben and Jerry's crowd led by the commie pied piper Bernie Sanders - and people loved him because he was "independent" and frankly their plan worked, strongly supported by the uber lib voting base associated with UVM. Then came the high taxes, socially liberal laws and the entitlement programs which hooked old people and the poor - galvanizing their support base. Also, about that time came organized efforts by the progressive left to make the state less entitled and more diverse (less white) and also religious groups (some even well intended/humanitarian) that brought in central Americans and Africans in by the thousands. That went sideways. Now there are "no go" enclaves of immigrants in Burlington and other places. Defund the police was huge up there too. Now they want to hire cops but nobody will work there as it's such a shitty environment. At one point Burlington had a BLM outfit providing "security" in city park. I don't think I've ever been anywhere more anti-police except maybe Seattle. Of course, the liberal enforcement policies towards enforcement of drugs has been a complete disaster. Heroin has sadly destroyed many small VT towns.

I'd like to say it's only Burlington and Montpelier - but it's not, it's all trickled out to smaller towns too. Progressive communism spreads like a cancer. There are a few rural hold outs no doubt, but the state and local gov't is lost. Case in point they went full retard during covid with population control measures. The state's "republican" governor signed a high-capacity magazine ban, and an AWB will probably get passed in the near future. I remember the old fudds insisting for years how pro-2A Berrie was, well that turned out to be bullshit didn't it? Go figure, you can't trust a commie. It's only a matter of time before they come for your AR. The "you don't need an AR to hunt deer with" crowd is a thing there.

St Albans, once a great solid blue-collar town refuses to have SROs in the schools because they will intimidate students of color (what - all 2 of them!?). Insanity.  Also, the trans agenda shit is huge up there too with boys on the girls sports teams. It's a shitshow.

I joined the Army in 1991 and never looked back. I've been a Tennessee resident since 1996. There is no scenario I could ever see moving back there. It's sad, but the place as seriously lost its way and won't ever be the same. I hate it as all my people are from there and I still have family there, but it's gone far, far from the place I grew up.

It may an accurate assessment of the current situation in VT much like upstate NY used to be.  The question is where will the masters in Montpelier take the state in the future. That's what any person pondering moving there should consider.  The same can be said for VA, NC, GA and PA.

The lack of mag ban enforcement or citizen non-compliance isn't a good indicator. Go ahead and use of 30 round mag to defend yourself and see what happens….it sucks and VT is one of the most beautiful states in the union. The generational residents are good solid people but you couldn't pay me to move anywhere in New England anymore.

That being said I still want to do the Long Trail….just have to pick a time between mud and bugs.

I lived in NC for 10 years off and on for work.

It's a nice state, but not for me.  Lack of winter makes it feel like it has no soul-way too boring.  That and the heat/humidity during the spring/summer/fall makes you slow down.

I love the cold and there is really no drawback to it being cold.  Well other than needing to drink my work beers faster so they don't freeze.

I can't wait until the ground freezes and i have a foot+ of snow on the ground.  I have three big white pines, an ash, and a couple maples I need to knock down near my drain field.  The snow will give me an extra cushion in case I screw up.

The gun law stuff that happened in Vermont blew my mind.

While they were known for only having gun laws that basically were around to make it harder to poach deer, that was about it.
And also had the venerable legal right to shoot to protect property.

Their state consituition literally spelled out more directly than the federal what they meant and what they wanted to avoid and how strong the right to keep arms was.
People used to think gun control couldn’t happen there with such a strong state constitution.
I guess with the magazine stuff they decided magazines weren’t the guns.

There is a lot of gun support there, but the foundation of it was boomer/fudd type hunting stuff.
Many a “I support the 2A but….
Who really needs a 30 round magazine to hunt deer?
The guns are just for the military
Etc.
Hunter types there.

And as you say, what will happen in NC and GA, etc.
The demographics are not pretty and the trend is not good.

Even growing up in North Georgia, I preferred the cold. Maybe it was those cold Friday night football games. When I moved to NH, I was badly disappointed by the first winter. It was very mild, and by mild, I mean we stopped using the wood burning stove in early April. The next one was great and made up for it.

Some more things to think about when considering NH:
1. There are yankees and there are damn yankees. NH is the good kind.
(When we were looking at houses, there was a coffee table in one house that had copies of "Yankee Magazine" displayed across it. I was walking past it with the real estate lady, and I said, "Hmmm. That's strange." She said, "What's strange?" I said, "Where I come from, that word starts with a 'D'." She did not think I was funny and dropped us as clients)
2. People in NH frigging love their ice cream. I mean to the levels of a trailer park crack addict.
3. The best apples in the world come from New England
4. If you are considering buying a house that has a well, find out how many gallons per minute the well produces, and don't take their word for it. Ask for certification.
5. Make sure the house gets tested for radon gas. All places with granite lying under the soil have radon.
6. Become friends with guys who hunt. That way if one of them gets a moose tag and manages to bag one, you can help drag a section of moose out of the woods.
7. Don't cross your fingers that you will ever get a moose tag.
8. If you have always wanted to live in Finland but could never manage to scratch up the money to make it happen, move to New Ipswich. Most the the people there are 2nd and 3rd generation Americans out of Finland. Really decent people. And Pizza Haven Too has good pizza.
9. Get a frequent flyer card for Dunkin Donuts
10. Make the occasional trip to the North End of Boston to scratch your Italian itch.
11. If someone with an Irish accent calls you a "feckin' idjit", that generally means you are friends.
12. Walmarts in NH are generally very clean with great products.
13. If you stay long enough, you will not be happy living anywhere else. Ask me how I know.

I know Tennessee well. I lived outside Memphis in Collierville for 3 years before moving to NC. There are too many reason to NOT live west of Nashville or close to Memphis to list.

If you live east of Nashville, you get into some nice hilly and then mountainous terrain. There are areas that have more crime problems than others, so check that out.

Chattanooga and Knoxville definitely have their pluses and minuses. The aquarium in Chattanooga is one of the best places to be on a hot summer day.

If you move to eastern TN, I hope you like bears.

Vermont is a beautiful state with a rich history, outdoor activities that'd fill a lifetime, genuinely kind helpful neighbors and low crime.

However, the politics are left of the left and that isn't going to change. It's the state that had gay marriage before it was cool and there isn't an office they wouldn't elect Bernie Sanders to.

If you have fuck you money or a remote job you can buy a nice house in the absolute middle of no where and never interact with anyone outside of the occasional run to a general store while enjoying some of the most beautiful country Earth and never hearing or seeing another soul.

Otherwise, just go with NH. It's basically the same but with lower taxes, more freedom and cheaper booze. You can open carry without a seat belt on as you drive through a liquor store helpfully placed at an interstate rest stop.

It's like the other 49 states aren't even trying to keep up.

It depends. If your area/county is really rural, has a constitutional sheriff and likeminded residents, I would live there regardless of whatever stupid laws they have  and just live like a free man. I wouldn’t live in any of the liberal bastion areas though. Forget Vermont, I would go Wyoming or Montana.

I like Vermont, but I'm only a visitor, and I've never stayed for any real length of time.  Some of those small towns I've been to in Vermont are fantastic and nearly without peer.  And there are some other places that are absolute dumps, that time and prosperity have forsaken.

If politics is something that gets under your skin, even in the slightest, Vermont is probably not the place for you.

Being from Montreal, I've spent a lot of time in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's in Vermont.
Fishing, camping, and skiing were all awesome there.
We hung out in Burlington and it was a University town with a smalltown vibe.
I went back to there in 2010 with my wife and I couldn't believe how much it had changed.
Of course it had modernized a bit, but it had lost its old town charm.

The point was how far from the equator and what elevations/terrain our ancestors survived in.
It’s a joke.

Yes I have frozen my ass off.

Yes I will mock you for complaining about an uncomfortable bed as well.  And how I have sleep sitting up in water in a flooding swamp/jungle or on rocks,

Before going to bed on my 12K mattress with infintagle adjustable 3 point position adjustments on my 870 thread count sheets .

That’s all well and good. I’m not personally going to put myself in a bad or undesirable situation if I don’t  have to. I have reached a point in life where that isn’t necessary, especially on a daily basis. You do you.

What is the best hospital in the NH area? We would need to be close to a decent one.

TN is great, just look in Middle or East TN is my recommendation. Prices are up though, a lot of folks moving here from CA and the NE states.

Personally, I’d check out the area just north of Chattanooga.

I don’t think we are after this thread. Probably stay much more south in Tennessee.

Middle TN here. Grew up in VT, 18 years. Couldn’t wait to leave and never looked back. TN has all I need and 2A friendly.

In the southern end, Elliot in Manchester is fine, and was excellent for the birth of our two kids.  The Exeter hospital is okay too.

Exactly. I would like to spend more time with my brother and his kids, otherwise I don’t have much interest in going back.
I do miss cheap maple syrup ha.

To be fair, most small town living up there is 45 min or more from even a small critical access hospital without major capabilities.
With small town volunteer rescue squads.  Think long response and transport times and more basic capability/experience crews.

These are the kind of places where if you do the Fred Sanford while shoveling your driveway, it is most likely game over.

Also, weather and road conditions can be challenging.  It’s not a great way to live if you need dialysis three days a week, etc.

If you need to be “close” to some major assets like Dartmouth, Burlington, Maine Medical Center, etc. your proximity to such will put you in a lifestyle much like surburban or city anywhere and kind cancels out being there.

Why bother with the move.

The average lifespan of an urban Amercian averages about six months longer than a rural American.
Most of which is spent being rushed to or suffering in a hospital.

I am visiting my brother in Northern VT in a month, we are taking my boys to Jays Peak ski resort for the water park. I also want to hit Burger Barn in Jeffersonville while there, any other suggestions?

If you are at the Burger Barn, you could hit Robby's Wildlife Refuge for a beer. Don't bring the boys though.

This. Dartmouth Hitchcock is great. Their multi level parking garage is usually an interesting adventure.
