I'm going to visit my Brother for the first time in state prison tomorrow. It's a 45 minute drive from where I live. I always take a small first responder type bag everywhere I go that has a little bit of everything including a small pistol and extra mag. I'm going to leave my CCW at home, but hate being that far from home without my bag.
I'm not sure about the law regarding bringing a firearm to the prison, even if it is locked in my trunk. I was reading online that they walk dogs around the parking lot looking for drugs and explosives. Should I leave all firearms at home? |

They don’t tolerate that sort of thing and I imagine a prison is on the list of PFZs not worth risking. |

If you're in Florida you are consenting to search of your persons or vehicle as soon as you arrive on DOC property. Will you be searched? Probably not, but why risk it?
|
|
And if you're busted with it. You and your brother are going to be roommates again. No shit, you'll be staying.

If you are truly worried Park a mile away and Uber to the jail. Lock it in glovebox or mini lockbox

Which institution are you going to? Most of them over in prison country are out in the middle of no where. Leaving your rig across the street is probably not an option.

Been in that one a few times. Yeah there is no "across the street" at most of them between Lake Butler and Okaloosa Correctional. It's just pine trees until you see the water tower, then the fence.
|
|
There is a pullout with picnic tables about 300 yards west (across from lake city correctional). That is national park not prison land no? park and hike.

OP could've Googled his concern but was looking for drama. The purpose of the new law is to allow citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights during their commutes to and from work. Exceptions listed in F.S. 790.251(7) include school property, correctional institutions, nuclear power plants, national defense facilities, facilities for explosives or combustible materials, or a motor vehicle owned, rented, or leased by a person's employer.

|
Find a gun shop or pawn shop nearby and have them keep your carry piece while you visit your brother.

I’ll just say that I’ve been visiting correctional facilities including supermax institutions as a contractor for years and have never once had my vehicle searched and have never once seen them searching vehicles. Aside from tool inventory on arrival and departure I’ve never been searched either for that matter. I could have carried into the prison on hundreds of occasions and nobody would have known. Maybe it’s different for people visiting inmates but I’ve always known security to be surprisingly lax. I get more scrutiny going into schools and production plants.

Unless you are a LEO or covered by LEOSA....DON'T bring any firearms, knives, ect onto the DOC property to include the parking lot. LEO's can generally leave a firearm in the trunk.

I chose option C - ask GD. Guess what? I had my answer in minutes. Did you have something better to do than offering your recommendation online? View Quote |

View Quote Having said that, two options - one, contact the prison and see if they offer storage lockers at Traffic Control. Some do, where civilians may store a sidearm while inside and retrieve on the way out. Rare, but it does happen. Second, is there a re storage locker place in the town where the prison is located that will do a short term small rental, like a safety deposit box? There IS a third option that some of our visitors use - they come in with two vehicles and one waits off property with presumably prohibited items inside, while the others go visit, and some park off property and bum a ride in/out. |

Quoted: AS someone with 17 years working behind the wire - leave it ALL at home. Get Home Bags are escape paraphernalia, firearms, ammo, knives of any kind, cameras, nothing but your basic emergency tools for your vehicle. Sorry, but that's the rules here at this state prison. If you are caught with prohibited items, it does NOT mean arrest, unless you are a complete jerk, but you will never be allowed visitation while he is in that Dept custody. Right, wrong or indifferent, you guys just need to realize there are places you cannot take your guns, I know we all like to believe we have things under control at all times and can protect ourselves, prisons are not a place to take a gun, this is one of those places that risk does over rule reward..
|
|
Just out of curiosity, your brother has been in how long and you haven’t visited him yet?

A phone call and maybe a few bucks on his books is as far as I would go.
An hour and a half drive to see him? Fuck no. Sorry bro, your circus not mine. |

I'm doing tech stuff this week at a nearby jail.
Asides from the constant escort all my tools in my bag will be scrutinized and likely inventoried. They don't mess around. Leave your stuff at home and tell us what he is in for. |

The question, simplified: Hi! I'm going to visit a state prison. Can I take my gun?
|

I’ve been to see a bud in prison at the Clements Unit in Amarillo three times. I did an internet search and called the unit for info. I had to keep my CCW locked in my car in a locked box. I was searched at the gate for the first two visits. My lady visit in November of 2018 I wasn’t searched. There was no gate guard at all that time. FL may be different.

|
Just call the prison and ask what their rules are.
Do not be scared. Edit: I would just leave the gun at home. |
