No. I bought him a frozen chicken sandwich from the commissary and he microwaved it. Said it was much better than their food.

@tominjax , did you eat lunch at the prison, and if so, what did you and your brother eat?
No. I bought him a frozen chicken sandwich from the commissary and he microwaved it. Said it was much better than their food.
I hope he stays clean when he gets out. I could not imagine doing 10 years in prison.

Back home. No car search and no cavity search

There was a ID check, a walk through metal detector and then a pat down.

Brother has had his entire head tattooed with a skull and full sleeves on both arms with everything from skulls to Nazi symbols

Glad you made it out. Forgot to mention the dress code, absolutely no cammo!  Never fails at construction pre-bid conferences at FL State Prisons, some jack-leg contractor will have on some form of cammo and the DOC Captains will tell him to go back to his truck and change clothes and lock that up in his truck or GTFO.

OP: How did the conversation go with him about his upcoming release and his expectations vs yours?

Skull tattoos and full sleeves with Nazi icons may make integration into society a bit tough.

What's their problem with camo? Not much vegetation inside the wall to blend in with. Easier to bring in contraband?

When I worked at one the chase team and tactical units all had a camo uniform, so prison admin considered it part of a uniform.

Unless you want to move in with your brother, it would be  good idea to leave them at home.

AS someone with 17 years working behind the wire - leave it ALL at home. Get Home Bags are escape paraphernalia, firearms, ammo, knives of any kind, cameras, nothing but your basic emergency tools for your vehicle. Sorry, but that's the rules here at this state prison. If you are caught with prohibited items, it does NOT mean arrest, unless you are a complete jerk, but you will never be allowed visitation while he is in that Dept custody.
Having said that, two options - one, contact the prison and see if they offer storage lockers at Traffic Control. Some do, where civilians may store a sidearm while inside and retrieve on the way out. Rare, but it does happen. Second, is there a re storage locker place in the town where the prison is located that will do a short term small rental, like a safety deposit box?
There IS a third option that some of our visitors use - they come in with two vehicles and one waits off property with presumably prohibited items inside, while the others go visit, and some park off property and bum a ride in/out.

I've thought about starting a business in Florence where I'd get a big panel van and outfit it with as many little storage boxes as I could put in it, and then going from facility to facility at shift chages and visitation turn outs and renting the boxes to visitors and employees who need to store stuff. I wonder if I'd even break even.

If anyone here works with working dogs I have a question. Are there a lot of dogs who can detect multiple different scents, like drugs AND cellphones AND explosives, or are dogs more often specialists who just sniff out one thing?

Nice to see that prison has positively impacted his long term decision making skills.

Good. I made it perfectly clear that I will help him if I can, but he can not stay with me. I've told him in letters, but wanted to do it in person.

I told him the tattoos are going to make things even more difficult and the Nazi stuff might cause major issues in today's society.

So what all did you talk about?

The upcoming family reunion and how you would send him the t-shirt that everyone will be wearing that day?

OP could've Googled his concern but was looking for drama. The purpose of the new law is to allow citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights during their commutes to and from work. Exceptions listed in F.S. 790.251(7) include school property, correctional institutions, nuclear power plants, national defense facilities, facilities for explosives or combustible materials, or a motor vehicle owned, rented, or leased by a person's employer.
He also could have made a simple phone call. "Hey, can I bring my gun to the prison if I leave it in my car?"
Or he could have asked himself the question and applied the slightest bit of common sense.
