OP, I'm sorry I can't help with "which brand to get."
The truth is that many brands have good washers and lemons. You have to find THE washer that works.
Consumer Reports is a good resource for this.
The trouble with online reviews (which I also rely on) is that the people with the issues tend to be the loudest, and it's not always fair.
BUT...EVERY REPAIR PERSON I've spoken with--EVERY ONE...says simple is better.
So instead of just looking at the brand, maybe look at the features. If it's a monster computer controlling your washer, go for one that doesn't have that. If it has 30 gazillion cycles and options, go for one that has six. That's all you'll use.
You need water level choice.
You need to be able to choose how LONG and how HARD it washes.
You need temperature control, and you do NOT need the washer to make these decisions for you. That's dumb.
And the more the washer tries to do that, the more the washer will break.
When you look at the "pretty" washers, they're all going to be that high-end stuff.
Go down to the "cheaper models" in each brand, and look at those.
Choose the simplest, then find out which ones are actually still made in the USA.
I'm not against outsourcing, but for these appliances, it just doesn't seem to work very well.
Sorry to not be more help.
I do several loads of laundry per day. My washer works hard. Simple is better.
ETA: Oh and go for the largest tub they have in that simple, top-loading line. You want a big tub that runs quiet and doesn't walk all over the floor after the first month.
