It's been a while since I have checked out appliances but I was at Lowe's the other day and noticed that many of the washing machines (Whirlpool & Maytag anyway) had control knobs instead of buttons. Upon closer inspection many even had agitators and features like the ability to add extra water. Some even said "commercial grade" on them but who knows how true that is. Are the old-school features making a comeback?
It was mentioned in another washing machine thread that Speed Queen was no longer making washers that lived up to their reputation due to some change in regulations. Is that true? My Maytag washer & dryer set has been solid but I figured I would get a Speed Queen set when it was time to replace them. Now I'm not so sure and these new Maytag & Whirlpool offerings are intriguing. |

Speed Queen changed their drum design and now the drum and agitator are one piece and dont clean as well.
Guy made a YouTube vid about it so they pulled his dealer status. |
|
Interesting. So are the new Speed Queens not worth it any longer?

Those high efficiency washers are bullshit. Give me the kind that fills with water and actually cleans things.

That's what I'm saying. It looks like these new Maytag & Whirlpool washers have a deep fill option that fills the tub like the good ol' days.

My Whirplpool set is 24 years old and going strong. My wife is bound to buy something new soon, but I will not get ride of our current set. I will hook them up as back ups for when the new units take a dump (they will).

I love my old school Whirlpool. I had an issue a couple years ago where the lid kill switch came apart (the glue deteriorated), which made it stop working, so I just bypassed it. Sure it’s more dangerous and probably violates some building code, but now I can even watch it do its magic with the lid open. Sometimes I’ll stand there and have a beer and just watch it swishing my clothes around, cleaning the hell out of them.

I went from a cheap GE washer with agitator to an LG HE w/o agitator.
LG cleans just as good if not better than my old GE. Takes longer on most settings, but that doesn't bother me. Super quiet too. |

I am skeptical of front loaders except the ones at the coin-op laundromat that have a door handle that makes it feel like I'm closing a submarine hatch. |

No idea what you are talking about. The floor on every store I have ever seen has always had models with nobs and dials.

If you don't it looks like it's got dried snot all over it when it comes out of the dryer. |

I have current Whirlpool models for my washer and dryer. They are both "high efficiency", but have yet to have any issues with them cleaning things. Also, the dryer is strictly mechanical and appears to use primitive, reliable components. Both are going on four years now with absolutely no sign of trouble.

People have a bad habit of filling the front loaders with too many clothes too. I use powdered detergent in my dishwasher that has phosphates, works like a charm, way better than the crap they sell at the store. |

I just bought a new Maytag dryer on black Friday, old school all mechanical, knob, buzzer, it's like the 70's again. I had an older high-end Maytag washer w/agitator and a spare motor in storage so I got something that kind of matched for cheap.
My expensive Samsung front-load set wouldn't fit well in the new house so they're staying in the old one, they worked fine for 9 years but I think my clothes are getting cleaner now. |

It's been awhile since I've looked at washers but last time I did look they seemed to all be button operated. They might've had a single main knob but that was it. At least in the more expensive section. Same deal with agitators, seemed like a rarity last time I looked. View Quote Between Lowes Home Depot and Menards I'd say it was about 50/50 Buttons vs Knobs on the ones they offered and about 40/60 agitator vs impeller |

My parents' whirlpool washer and dryer were older than I am when the dryer finally gave up the ghost last month. I really can't see spending major money on one with all the bells and whistles when they do a pretty simple job. The only complaint my mother ever had with it was the agitator meant the internal space was too small for comforters.
Theirs was knobs. I bought a samsung set last year that has buttons, although you pick the settings with a knob. |

I have an old Roper and Estate that I bought used from a friend nearly 15 years ago. They were replacing them with new ones, and I think I paid $175 for both. They are both still trucking along nicely. I did have to replace the tub seal on the washing machine a while back, but that was my fault for trying to wash something I shouldn't have.

Just went through this search. Good luck finding the queen of the pigs... none of them are good anymore. At this point it’s an exercise of trying to find the one that sucks least and may last 3-5 yrs.

When we bought our house in 16, we bought some Maytag or whirlpool top loader (5.3 something or another) and the matching dryer.
The washer doesn't have an agitator and doesn't hardly use any water it seems, but it clean damn good on the deep clean cycle. It has gotten stuff out of my kids clothes that I didn't think it could. The dryer works well, but on the eco stetting takes like 1.5hrs to dry vs maybe 45 min with non eco, not sure how that saves money. They were like $700-800 total on sale I think. I can't remember, only thing i told my wife was no way in fuck we were getting a front loader. |
