I wrote an email to the Tallahassee columnist, and he responded.
I wrote: Dear Mr. Ensley: I truly hope that your November 22nd column was written as satire. If it was, I can commend your use of punctuation, but little else. But I’m fairly confident that it wasn’t. You’re clearly one of those mentally ill people who should never be allowed to buy a gun. I hope you seek professional help for your paranoia. He responded with: Thanks for writing. You may be assured I will never own a gun. Gerald Ensley I realize that sending him an email was a waste of time and electrons. One can only hope that he never breeds. |

Got to love his math skills, you have a 3 in 100,00 chance of being killed by a gun in the US, but you don't need a gun for protection because you only have a 1 in 250 chance of being the victim of a violent crime. They have been with us in various types for hundreds of years. They have been produced (crudely of course) in prisons and other places that are considered "Gun free zones" They can make them illegal, but they cannot remove the knowledge. For as long as the gun is a symbol of power, they will continue to be desired for good or bad people. The fact that there are far more gun owners than non-owners, that will fight their attempts at taking them both worries them and disgusts them at the same time. Their fantasy is that the Police and the Military will jump at the chance to "Crush" gun owners in one fell-swoop "for the children" is patently ridiculous. And illustrates their illness quite well. I would guess that this person that is quoted, is under the impression that we will merely give up our property when we are asked to do so. |

I wouldn't go after this person (or any other person doing the same thing he is) personally. "Once I bravely came out on [my stance], attacks of a personal and vicious nature began, but I bla bla" I'd go another route, and hit them in either their pocket book, embarrass them in the media, or make the people in his circle uncomfortable to be around him. I called Mr. Ensley out a few years ago when I spoke at a rally at the State Capital. The week before the rally he wrote an op-ed titled, 'Socialist' is the New Slur . I called him in his office and challenged him to come and speak at the rally, that I would give up my spot in the program to let him explain his position to all of the people he denigrated in his article. He declined. I called him out at the podium in case he grew a set and decided to show up... he didn't...
Socialist. It's the new N-word. So know when you call Barack Obama a "socialist," the rest of us are thinking: "There goes a racist."
Ensley then goes on to "prove" his point by speaking in generalities. Because that's what all this is about. There is a segment of the population that simply can't accept a black man was elected president of the United States. So they express their contempt by calling him a socialist because they know they can't say the N-word in public.
