My wife and kids want a dog.
We have a small backyard. Neighborhood is walkable if armed so I will probably be the only one taking the dog on long walks. Maybe once a day realistically. Hot summers, cold winters in OK. Must be good with kids. Suggestions? |

Boston Terrier
Boxer Lab ETA: Mastiffs are great in small yard situations and love kids. Lots of dog though.. big shits, big food bills. |

What kind of activity level are y'all comfortable with? Not trying to be a jerk but don't get a high energy dog that needs lots of walks and exercise if you're not willing to do it. Just my .02.

West Highland Terriers are cool. Kinda like a big dog in a small dog’s body. I’d definitely own one if I couldn’t have a big dog.

English mastiff.
eta. Fine in small yard even apartment. Great with kids. Doesn't need long walk or any real maintenance. Females don't drool that bad. |

Golden Retriever for older kids or English Bulldog for young kids

Please do NOT get a Shiba Inu. They are assholes. Yes, we love her dearly, but she is the most conceited, stuck up, holier-than-thou, no desire to please, I deserve better, where's my palace you plebe dog I've every experienced in my life. And I consider us to be very experienced dog owners. She also climbs furniture and the largest cat tree, and usually naps on the back top of the sofa on only the freshest laundered blanket. My wife says "dog hardware running cat software".

Do you like your kids?
That plays a big factor in breed selection according to GD.... |

The correct answer was in the first reply.
There is no better family dog than a lab or golden. |
|
I plan on getting my kids a short haired pointer whenever they are old enough.

For kids you just can't beat a Lab, I have two of them, just a great family dog..

Akita until I saw hot. Bull mastiff until I saw cold. Attached File

Love my Heelers. Dont get a heeler unless you know what you're getting into.

We got a rescue Shih Tzu and could not be happier. He has been a great little dog when my kids were little and even now.

Female German Shepherd. Standard American working line. Doesn't need a big back yard. Only barks for certain reasons. Home and family protective. Small child and cat friendly too. Smart and loyal. You've seen "I Am Legend", right?
Attached File Rescue. No adoption fee. |

Neighborhood walkable if armed…?
Probably a German shepherd. Even if there are other equally capable dogs nothing has the immediately recognizable look of a GSD. |

I have had 4 in my 62 years of life all have been joy to own.. awesome bird dog and family pet all in one https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/61504/brit-2733564.jpg View Quote This, but only if you plan to bird hunt. Not fair to turn that into just a pet, it needs to get some birds. |

Pit bull reference on page one.
Our "black lab" (staffordshire terrier mix) is ~55 pounds. Great temperament with the kids. Compact guy, easy to transport in car, good around the house, minimal shedding, etc. Never barks. |
|
For the kids? Pitbull, if money for dog food gets tight no problem
On a serious note labs, goldens, and Aussies are all great options. Aussies are a lot of fun and high energy, super smart, and kids have a blast playing catch and frisbee with them. |
