Lol. I'm pretty sure the pilots and dispatch don't even look at the local weather prior to calling for taxi.

Started thinking about this...since well...who knows these days.

Lets say you are a pilot...you are a few hundred souls on board....all is well...no turbulence....no drama....passengers are having an uneventful trip.....and then you get the radio chatter....it happened....and its happening. Maybe you see it from the cockpit. What do you do now? You have to land somewhere....where are you going? Is there actually established protocol for this situation? What does the book say to do?

If it's just the one, and thirty seconds or so after the flash the plane hasn't been compromised by the overpressure wave, then it's probably not going to be too complicated.

It's certainly not a binary event.  Probability rack and stack of sustained line of sight with flash that could have compromised flight crew vision, distance from thermal, eventual overpressure magnitude, direction of overpressure, some possible electronic complications, alternates, comms, et cetera.

Indeed:

On the way to Wichita, Kansas, Jake encounters an abandoned Boeing 757 airliner that apparently made an emergency landing on the highway. The plane landed without suffering significant visible damage and deployed its emergency evacuation slides, but the passengers are not to be found. Nearby is the wreckage of a regional jet, which crashed with a presumable loss of all passengers and crew. Jake retrieves thecockpit voice recorder from the crashed plane and returns to Jericho.

At the Sheriff's Office, after the children are escorted from the room, the tape from the recorder is played. The recording reveals a desperate, chaotic situation in the air. Pilots report seeing mushroom clouds inDenver, Kansas City, and Dallas. They also report seeing military aircraft traveling at high speeds at various locations throughout the airspace over the country. All communication with air traffic control has been lost, and planes are flying without guidance as their fuel supplies dwindle. Some pilots decide to attempt landings on highways and in fields. The tape cuts off as the pilots of the commuter plane realize that they will crash. However, Jake discovers that Emily's fiancé, feared dead, may have survived, as part of the transmission reveals that his plane made a successful emergency landing in a field in Nebraska.

1) Depending on the proximity to the blast. Slow to maneuvering speed.

2) Check fuel and projected range. Find a small airfield upwind and away from a major metro area.

3) If Mexico or Canada was an option. Burn hard for there.

The CRJ 900 I used to fly could take a direct hit from lightning and still keep going. The electronics would be…….strange after. But it was still flyable. All modern airliners have this ability.

Firstly, the female copilot would be blinded. She didn’t listen.

I spent 6 years in SAC fondling nukes. I can tell you there was never a plan what one should do if inbound nukes were expected at the base. As in, there literally was not a plan, it was never even discussed. SAC planned everything, EVERYTHING, there was no plan for inbound nukes. Getting nuke assets off the ground isn’t what I’m talking about. I’m talking about everyone who didn’t fly off with a full load.

I always assumed it was either because command thought it was pointless to even discuss, or they didn’t think it was possible that they’d be able to pull it off.

At this point we learn that Hollywood writers think that the CVR is a cassette tape that the local sheriff would be able to play.

Seems like a poor information source.

Everybody saying “Caribbean Island” doesn’t understand how those islands work.

They’re not self-sustaining, all food and supplies and fuel gets brought in by boat or air. They’re all little resort communities that are in no way prepared for a natural disaster, let alone the aftermath of a global nuclear war. Why do you think everyone evacuate the minute hurricane is spotted?

You’ll starve to death or be killed off by the natives in a few weeks, fighting over scraps.

That and anyone with a carryon on the floor in the bulkhead row immediately died after the first blast
