What does the "AR" stand for in AR15? - Page 1

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What does the "AR" stand for in AR15? (Page 1 of 3)

I was under the impression that it stood for ARmalite but a quick web search shows plenty of people say that it's Armalite Rifle.

I even have a recollection that Armalite used to have the story on their web page years ago that it was, in fact, ARmalite.

Can someone here refresh my memory?

Armalite is wrong. Some of the early AR-whatevers were shotguns, an auto-cannon, and even a gun pod if I remember right.

Wouldn't make sense to be like, "That's the Armalite Rifle - 13, 30mm cannon" would it?

Not surprising since the Armalite of today has next to nothing to do with the original company.

ARmalite, not Armalite Rifle. They had an AR-9 and AR-17 shotgun (not a rifle) and more recently an AR-24 pistol (also not a rifle.)

The real Armalite said it stands for ARmalite.
I've seen quite a few people lately saying "Armalite Rifle" also, but I also hear people say Voltor and Sayguh. Doesn't make it right. I get that they're trying to weed out the "Assault Rifle" possibility, but that's a lose-lose argument anyway. Nobody calling an AR an assault rifle really cares if it's an assault rifle. They don't care about actual definitions of real words.

Well, ME21Yrs than learned it meant "Armalite Rifle 15", around the time I really started to want one.

And 12<ME<21 didnt really give a shit what is was called because life was making me its bitch.
