the only reason to mine shit in space is to build shit in space.

Until they have perfected growing barley and hops in zero gravity it is all a waste of time.

LOL. In 66 years we created powered flight, split the atom, and landed humans on the moon.

Less than a human lifetime. And you're gonna declare that our capitalist society will NEVER figure out how to economically extract the unlimited resources of the solar system?

The gold would be treated similar to diamonds.  The owner doles only so much gold to keep the available quantity low and the prices high.

That won't work with large scale, industrialized mining of asteroids. Once humanity is off this planet in a big way any Shmoo can who can scrape the capital together for a ship and mining equipment can go out and grab all the fill in the blank they want.

It won't be like it is now where a cartel like Debeers can maintain scarcity. Even here at this point in history the only people who treasure diamonds are some combination of uneducated and vain people who can be tricked into treasuring almost anything.

Really, I think you have it backwards. Our economy is based on the cost of limited resources.

If cobalt, nickel, chrome, or other materials become cheaper, then you can use them in places where they are too expensive now.

Platinum is very abundant in asteroids. It is highly useful for catalysts.

So much is based on the value of our limited mineral resources. What happens when we tap into the nearly unlimited metallic resources of the asteroids in our solar system?

When I was mining Pgm's  platinum group METALS.   Final process was shipped to Belgium because of U.S. EPA LAWS.   not sure if that's changed.

Dude

The metal value of asteroids ranges up to the hundreds of trillions of USD. There's no environmental impact to extract those metals. They can be dropped anywhere on the planet, ready to be used.

Maybe. The economy is becoming more decentralized and harder to control.

You're wrong there, my friend. The USA will definitely not be the first to get us off this rock because of communism, but progress is alive and well in other places. You better believe China and Russia are busy trying to figure out a moon base or a giant ass spaceship or something while "we're" over here arguing about which bathroom neon colored hair faggots can use, and which pronoun they want to be addressed by in their Air Force signature.

Every dirt side government out there is going to want to tax asteroid miners, and some of them are going to pay it in metric tons of iron at 20,000 meters per second delivered to the tax man's office.

Today in this thread we hear from dormers and those who already bow down to communism and the Orwellian future.

Fucking choke yourselves, get out of the way and let those who want to rape this solar system get out there and crush everything socialism and begin a new type of gold rush to the stars and beyond so we CAN get off this fucking rock as God intended. Now is the time for commies to die so that free people can live and profit! Leaders will hang and the future of America will be assured! Fuck all other nations! America first in all things! America will rule the stars! Fuck you haters and commie cucks!

This has already happened in history.   Aluminum used to be the most expensive metal.   Lower the cost and it is used everywhere. Same with what we call rare earth metals now.   The tech age is limited by these resources. If platinum is as common as steel think of all the crazy new things will be created. Copper being replaced by gold in electric wiring. The true hunt for super conductors will start. The economy will not crash it will boom. Rice university has discovered a titanium gold mix that is 3-4x stronger than steel but is to expensive to be practical.  Scandium strengthens   aluminum but you can’t hardly find a 340pd anymore. The hurdle is to mine the first asteroid.  After that the floodgates will open.   I believe in it enough I would help fund a Kickstarter.

Klingons and Romulans can be dealt with easily if we take them seriously and not pussyfoot around with them.

As long as the mass is accelerated to Earth's vector before landing, why would it alter Earth's orbit?
