My father is about to buy some 65 foot gawdy monstrosity and I couldn't help but think "This isn't why I would buy a boat"

Whatever. It's his money

But i'm fine with my 2004 20' Trophy. My dad has a 50' Boat that they never use. I can't see owning something that big.

Unrealistically? Well, paging Blackfox to the thread.

Realistically, a nice three cabin 50 foot or so sailboat.

Those are nice.

I'd be partial to a nice 37' Pacific Seacraft canoe-sterned sloop (or cutter).
Just big enough to circle the globe, not so big that handling it is a nightmare.
ETA this is one:

No doubt. I was on one this past weekend in Destin. Nothing I've been on (center console wise) comes close to the performance, layout, and handling. The Invincible is 2nd place.

An FPB 78. Sadly, the owners/designers have bowed out due to age and wanderlust, and no more will be built or sold. People that buy FPBs tend not to be normal yacht buyers, and they rarely come up on the secondary market.
