Tribes.

America's Army. The old one, not the new reboot.

"You SQUAD has been ELIMINATED!"

I played AA so freaking much through college.  I loved playing the VIP in Hospital, and managing to get kills as him.

AA was the game that got me into PC FPS gaming (and therefore taught me how superior it was).  Before that I had thought PC was for flight/space sims and consoles were for basically everything else.  Oh how wrong I was, when I discovered mouse+keyboard for shooters.

I don't remember pipeline, I played a hell of a lot of bridge and hospital though.  Mountain pass (or whatever it was called) was another favorite, and a couple other of the SF maps I don't remember the names of.  One that included a bus stop and had the IED extra objective thing, shortly before the reboot that killed the game.

No, that is the correct order.  2 was a travesty, 3 was a partial course correction back to the greatness of one.  One was only limited because of its generation.  Best story and universe building, which two completely destroyed, and three kinda went halfway in between the two.

I concur. 1 was the best of the series by far.

2 really dumbed things down, removed the inventory, and added annoying stealth sequences. I want to shoot aliens in the face, thanks.

Half Life series
Portal 1 and 2
I think I've also played every fan made iteration of both of these. Some good, some bad.
(ETA - I just got Portal Reloaded... we'll see.)

Metro 2033 series
Dead Space series
Bioshock series
F.E.A.R. series (very dated now)
Prey
Singularity
SOMA

I can't pick a favorite, it would change daily.

#1 of all time = Defender (not Stargate Defender)  -> I cannot guess how many hours I spent on 3 of these machines. Honorable mention for Galaga

Best on DOS PC = Leisure Suite Larry

Best on Windows PC = Original DOOM -> I swear this game alone gave my right wrist carpal tunnel.

Some time around the last C&C I ran out of time for video games.

I tried looking up what the soldiers were saying (in Russian) all the time. I never could find anything remotely close.

So awesome but it must be played on PC. The PS3 port was absolute garbage. The DLC was literally unplayable. Once your save game file reached a certain size the game would just crash.

This is spot on. I ended up buying it for PC and copying my game save over.

You and I can be friends. Except for the Angry Birds thing, that would be nearly exactly my list.

BTW, if you liked Privateer, Wing Commander and Freelancer, but you have never played Tachyon: The Fringe, you should play Tachyon: The Fringe. You can snag it off ebay for like $15.  It's a space opera much like those games and the voice acting for the player is done by Bruce Campbell.  Fantastic game.

Edit: It's also on steam now apparently for $10.

Minecraft hands down

While I have given it a fair shake and it isn't my thing, it is the best selling game of all time.  In terms of copies sold it puts every other game in this thread to shame.

It changed not only the gaming industry but gave rise to much of the youtube "let's play" popularity. If it's the sort of game that grabs and holds your interest and you have a good group of friends who feel the same way, it's pretty easy to see why someone would name it.  It's basically the electronic version of a box of parts to make your own entertainment and fun, except the box has no bottom and there literally hundreds of different types of parts in it.

The experience it provides is up to and narrated by the player, not the developer.  To truly do that isn't unique concept now, but it's the grand daddy and hundreds of spinoffs of that concept now exist for a really good reason.  Games like minecraft are much more about the experience created with other people, than the actual game itself.  It's not popular because it's a great game. It's popular because it's a tool that provides a means, to make the experience what you want with like minded friends.

Again, it's not on my list but I can certainly get why it would on some.
