My son is 5, loves snakes. At my cabin we can usually find some garter snakes.

Last weekend we were looking and he says this looks like a good spot for a snake, flips over a dead log and yells out “dad, I got a blue racer over here” I thought he was just kidding but was messing with the log so I went over in time to see the last 6inches disappear in the log.

He was right lol.

Log was very rotted so slowly started taking it apart but never found it, It was likely a juvenile, but my son just said “dad… it must have went between your legs “

Probably right because I never saw it again.

Bad kill

Came upon this spectacular guy the other day in the barn. He was super chill as I got close to get some pics and video. He was big and hopefully won't get jacked up during hay season if he's out in my fields.

Ran across a cute little gardener today, walking the dogs. Made sure they gave it a wide berth, in case they decided to play with it.

Did the same with a decent sized Rat Snake a few weeks ago.

Of course, I don't have to wonder if any snake around here is a Copperhead or a Moccasin, because there aren't any.

We MAY see the occasional rattler, but I've never seen one.

Yep figures when I was looking for pics of rat snakes everything kept popping up as Black Rat and is why I went with Rainbow due to his markings.

Being scared of snakes is pathetic

Better scared and a dead, albeit misidentified snake, than spending a week in the hospital, possibly losing a limb or death and out $50K because your insurance won't cover the anti-venom. Yes, that happens with regularity.

What the hell, OP? You just killed a DeKay's brownsnake, they're not venomous and they help keep the local rodent population down. You just killed one of the Lord's creatures for no reason.

Let me help you identify snakes in the future so you don't do this again, because this is unacceptable behavior.

This is a DeKay's brownsnake.
It has green, brown, black and tan scales. It has a light-colored body with dark spots that are symmetrical in nature along its back. It has two stripes that run along its back. It has round, dark eyes and a round nose. It is not venomous.

These are Earth snakes.
The Earth snake has either a black body with rings of dark gray or a light gray body with rings of darker gray, as well as dark brown eyes, and the head is either darker or lighter than the rest of the body. Its scales are very distinct. It is not venomous.

This is an Eastern copperhead snake.
It has a tan/copper-like body with brown splotches and rings that get lighter towards the center of the patterns. The tips of their tales are either solid brown or green. It has yellowish eyes with vertical slit pupils. It is venomous.

This is a timber rattlesnake.
It looks similar to an Eastern copperhead, but it has a tan/brown body with solid black/dark brown splotches and rings. The head is usually devoid of splotches and rings, though some timber rattlesnakes have splotches or rings, but usually have stripes on the cheeks below the eyes. The eyes are tan with vertical slit pupils. It has a rattle and shakes it when it feels threatened. It is venomous.

This is an eastern diamondback rattlesnake.
It is almost the same as the timber rattlesnake, except it has dark diamonds instead of splotches and rings, with no stripes on the head. The diamond pattern covers the head. It is venomous.

This is a pygmy rattlesnake.
Similar to other rattlesnakes in South Carolina, the difference is that its body is mostly gray, like a field mouse. It has symmetrical splotches of tan and dark brown. It has copperish eyes with vertical eye slits. It is venomous.

This is a Northern cottonmouth.
It looks somewhat similar to a DeKay's brownsnake, but it is larger. It has a dark brown body with light green/light brown scales that form vertical lines up its sides. It has black, green and tan stripes on the sides of its head. It eyes are dark and have vertical slit pupils. It is venomous.

This is an Eastern coral snake.
It has a black body with black dot eyes, coppeish irises, the pupils enlarge when it feels threatened. The black body has red bands with yellow edges. It is venomous.

Any other snake you'll find in South Carolina is nonvenomous.

If a snake isn't trying to claim your garage or other living space as a burrow, leave it alone, whether it is venomous or not. If it is claiming a living space, and the snake is nonvenomous, you can remove it safely and place it in a spot that isn't a living space, preferably into a grassy or rocky area nearby. If the snake is venomous, call animal control or a professional snake handler. Only in situations where this cannot be done, should you euthanize/kill the snake.

Any questions?

It’s not hard at all if you go outdoors and do stuff outside of your freshly mowed yard. Lol
Copperhead- 11ish year old girl walking in yard after dark with no shoes, stepped on it, was bitten on the side of her foot.
Diamondback- 15ish year old girl helping her mom put pine straw around the shrubbery next to the house. She was putting it around some boxwoods, didn’t see the snake at the base of it, bit on the hand.
Timber rattler-25ish year old guy scouting hip high cotton, reached down to pull on a branch, snake was laying in the row, bitten on the hand.

I purposely didn’t include any drunken idiots that picked up a snake they shouldn’t have been messing with. None of them died, lost limbs or were permanently injured either. Not saying  that it doesn’t happen, I was just pointing out that it’s unlikely.

Based on size alone, they probably are Prairie rattlers, but that pattern screams Midget Faded. Midget Faded's top out at about 25".
A lot more work needs to be done in that general area, there's so much going on there. Same thing in N central Az. Midget Faded's have a small range there that also overlaps with Prairie, Great Basin, and Grand Canyon rattlers.
Second pic also looks to be Midget Faded. You may very well be in a Prairie/Midget Faded overlap area where hybridization occurs.
