From cycle rate I was thinking  MG42’s but weren’t those fairly light?

Dont shoot let them burn?

I got nothing... looked like 42s

They're both light and can be fired from nearly anywhere.

The actual German dude who killed a bunch of Americans at Omaha was using an 8mm copy of a browning machine gun iirc. The movie looked like mg42.

They were MG42's in cradle mounts.

Most likely MG42s. Possibly some 34s out there too. Been a while since I've seen it.

When you watch that scene I could not help but think that if the Germans had more 34's and 42's no one would have gotten off a landing craft.

Ive been around 42's at local MG shoots. Cyclic rate is very high, and very different from the rest.

Sound effects could have been overdubbed  on the movie.

MG 42 in the movie.

My understanding is many of the Normandy bunkers had the water cooled German Maxim gun Maschinengewehr 08 in 8mm.

Polish BAR. Static units also used Czech VZ26/30. Captured French stuff like the 24/29.

Was it the 34s that had super high rof, then the 42s that reduced it, or is the other way round?

If you're referring to Heinrich Severloh, his weapon was an MG42 being utilized in the "light" role off a bipod

34 had a slower rof in general but I think there was a version of it that blew even the 42 out of the water

If you read his book, you'll understand his "claim" was made as a sarcastic comment to a reporter's badgering.

I’ve never really looked into it all that much, but it would make sense for the Atlantic Wall to have been full of captured, obsolete, or other substitute-standard crew served small arms where the weight and field sustainability did not really matter. Water cooled MGs would have been particularly useful in that role.

My Granddad landed on Omaha beach the day after the initial strike.  Him and his buddies were messing with one of the German machine guns shooting it out in the ocean.  The Germans had booby trapped it and it exploded. My grandfather was injured and never told anyone in the family until his health started to fail and you could see the scar.

42s were 1200 rpm. Mg3s have been stepped down to about 800. 42s also have rate reducers, but thoses are a rather recent addon.

There was a mix of new, old, and captured equipment utilized on the wall as well as a mix of 1st, 2nd and 3rd line troops. Many troops that were wounded in other theaters and had permanent disabilities could still be useful in a static defense.

If you have the time this audio book touches on these things:

Opposite. 42 increased cyclic rate and decreased production time.

That's fucking SWEET!

I don't know for sure what all the Germans were using at Utah or Omaha beaches, but the Atlantic Wall was composed heavily with captured weaponry, especially the heavy artillery.  Also older, obsolete or foreign machineguns were also used pretty liberally.  Most likely the MG34 would have been used if a modern German MG was in use since the MG42's were being built as fast as possible to go to front line divisions.  I'm sure there were some 42's but not near as many as you would think.  The Atlantic Wall soldiers were generally not the elite soldiers of the Third Reich either.

MG42 1400 - 1500, MG3 around 1150 - 1200.

There are no rate reducers or anything else for the MG42 to lower the firing rate, the lowering of the firing rate in later models was a side effect of making the MG more safe for the machine gunner.
