Went to an NHL game last night and was admiring how fast the goalies are when defending the net and it got me to wondering what profession required the fastest reflexes?

First three I came up with were the NHL goalie, a fighter pilot and an F1 driver.

What else ranks up there?

Ice hockey is definitely the hardest sport. It is amazing how hard players shot the puck.

Race car driver and fighter pilot are good candidates. Surgeons, too.

I think jai alai is the fastest ball sport, not sure if there are professional leagues for it.

Maybe those Alaskan fishermen, they can be working one second and in the ocean the next second.

Fighter Pilot is probably top of the list IMo though.

A good fighter. Boxing, karate, MMA

eta, maybe a competitive moguls skier.

F1 driver? They seem to put a lot of effort into training reaction time. Maybe boxer?

I will concur with goaltending at a high level, figure what your reaction time has to be when you get a slapshot cranked at you from 15’ out.
It’s insanely quick, I have played in the net against college guys who while they were good are nothing compared to a Gretzky, Jagr, Ovechkin, Sakic or like.
I got smoked bad.

Another contender is a high level drag racer- reaction time is everything.

One of them took a wicked shot to the arm pad (whatever that thing is called) and it bounced past the blue line with a hefty thud.

That doesn't count in this discussion, there's no physical repercussion if they get it wrong

Almost certainly. Nothing in the real world is going to require reflexes as fast as esports.

that's moving the goalposts.  if you wanted to include physical repercussions, it should have been in the OP.

baseball batter. supposedly the single most difficult thing in sports. batter has to decide what to do wit the bat almost before the pitcher releases.

Watch the in car video of the hands of an F1 driver. They have a steering wheel full of controls to deal with as well. During the tail end of the F1 manual transmission era you had guys using hands and feet.

I've practiced with an NHL team.  "Smoked" doesn't even begin to describe it.

I did get asked back though.

That's up there. Any sport as a "goalie".  Combat sports.  I think they're all equal in that reaction speed is super important.

Other than drag racing, racing favors a bit different type of reaction speed.  Reacting to what the car is doing under you and changing inputs rather than reacting to a visual stimulus.

Eta: forgot baseball batter. Right up there with all the goalies.

NHRA pro stock driver. A good reaction time from a good driver is sub .010. a tenth can cost a race win.

Super bike., Motorcycle Gp,

just a hair slower than F1 laps, with more risk.

F1 is only faster because of wing downforce.

My first thoughts was F1, or any driver, really, but I doubt any of those guys could hot a major league pitch, or any pro baseball players could compete in NASCAR.

Would be interesting to have them compete in just some pure "whackamole" type competitions and rank them.

The top 5-10 racquetball players in the world have amazing quickness, athletic ability and anticipation. To watch them hit a ball at 150 miles per hour exactly where they want it an inch above the floor from awkward positions or while airborne is pretty neat.

Got to give to the hockey goalie and F1 guys though.
