It was only built for one model year (2010), but it was essentially the updated body style of the S-197 but still had the 4.6L V-8 with the 5 speed manual transmission instead of the new 6 speed MT-82.

This model year Mustang is sort of a forgotten version of the car, with people either gravitating towards the original retro look of the '05-'09 Mustang, or the S-197 with the 5.0 Coyote V-8.

Anybody have any experience with this model year?

Mechanically, the 4.6 was sorted out at that point, but wouldn’t it suck having about the same power level as the V6 cars in that body style? If it is a screaming good deal, and you accept it’s about 100hp shy of more modern muscle, then get it. The 4.6 is reliable enough, sounds good, just not enough HP. I’ve got a 2012 GT and have no complaints about the body and suspension other than these have a tendency to need new front control arms every 60k miles or so, probably depends on the quality of roads in your AO though.

Ecoboost Mustangs have gotten cheap on the used market.

I'm not sure why you'd want the 2010 unless it was just dirt cheap.

I had a 2010 GT Premium and loved it and miss it. Great car, loved driving it, had 0 maintenance issues.

I just don't know if I could stomach a 4cyl Mustang and the sound it makes. Even an underpowered 4.6L sounds like a V-8.

There is a possibility that I could seriously consider the 305hp V-6 S-197s, but I'd really want some decent braking and a good sounding exhaust.

The 4.6, both the 2V and 3V were turds from their inception.

The Coyote was the best thing to happen to Mustang since the original 5.0 302.

I had the 05. Yeah, low end torque wasn't there. Great car to drive in traffic in the 70 - 95 mph range. I worked 3rd shift and had to drive through the city at night. Loved it for that. SLP Loudmouth exhaust. I did a little SCCA solo racing in it. Way too nose heavy, not enough torque to push it around. I got a spare set of factory rims and put some lower profile tires on the front. It made the car a lot more neutral and it was handful on solo for me. I think the deciding factor to stop (other than divorce) was letting my BIL drive it on the solo course and he spun it out, doing a 540 degree spin and realizing I was still making payments on the thing. Everyone was like "that was cool as shit!" Yeah I just saw my bank account flash before my eyes. There was mods out the ass for those things, you just needed the cash or credit card to do it.

Don't do it. Get an 11-12 if you want that body style. I've had both.
And unless you get a 2010 for free, a coyote swap on a 2010 is more expensive than getting a 2011-2012.

I had a 2010 GT premium. Got it for a good deal when the 2011s started showing up. It was cheaper and the manual wasn't a Chinese unknown. And really, you don't need an extra 100hp for a car on the street. I wasn't going to race anyone, and i think the 4.6 sounded better stock than the 5.0.

2014 was the last model year for the S197. If I was the market I’d get one of those with the 5.0 Coyote engine.

OP. The 4.6 aren't "bad" engines it's just that the coyote offers so much more power. Plus the aftermarket is much bigger for the coyote.
I had a 2007 that I bought with 150K on it and run/raced the hell out of it till 180K. My son run/raced the hell out of it till 200k plus. It had a lot of aftermarket parts like cams, headers, intake, stall conv, TB etc. Had to put a transmission in it was the only major repair.

I had a 2011 with a Whipple and other mods and now have a 2012 that is still NA but a lot of bolt on parts. The coyote has 120hp more stock. So it really depends on what you want to do with it, and how much you want to pay.

While an S197 with a 5.0L is preferable, it isn't what I'd call "mandatory." It's the S197 that is absolutely necessary. I did find a really nice 2010 with the 4.6L and 5spd manual that's in really, really good shape that's also in my favorite color. The 4.6L has what I'd call a moderate amount of mods to it and is being sold by a dealer. Looks like it's been garaged 100% of the time.

The 2 valve 4.6 really wakes up with a set of Trick Flow heads and other appropriate mods, but I wouldn't even consider one unless I was committed to a build on a car I got for cheap.

Nah, intake/tune/exhaust they're very fun cars. 3.73s or 4.10s make them a riot. Even in stock form you can get up to a buck forty with the quickness.

I've had a few 4.6 3v's, good platform and bulletproof.

High flow cats will quiet a little but without cats that thing will be LOUD AS FUCK.

My 2005 GT had an offroad pipe and borla exhaust and that thing would crackle like hell.  Cold starts were not quiet at all.

Throw the power stop rotors in the trash.

Find a set of GT500 14in rotors/calipers and throw those on with 18in wheels.

I personally like 3.5 rear gears.   After 4 mustangs, two had 3.5x gear ratios and two bad 3.73 gear ratios.   I fuckin hate the 3.73s even in my 2015, wish they offered a 3.55 trutrak/torsen as I would have taken it.

My 95 was 3.73 but went back to 3.55
05 was 3.55 and liked it.
66 is 3.55 but then 380whp and 2800 pounds and it gives zero fucks.
2015 GT PP is 3.73 and hate it.

I have more road racer in me than drag racer.   I like my 2nd gear to carry past 60, 3.73 gets fucky depending on trans and tire height around 6k rpm.

I liked my 2005 but sold it at 135k, not worth rebuilding engine.   Had single adjustable shocks, lowering springs, tuned for 91, GT500 front brakes, FR500s, and Parnelli Jones/Saleen rear fascia that moved license out of rear bumper.


But get a 5.0 for an SN197, will hold value better always.  13/14 tail lights dont look at stupid either.

18k for a 4.6 3v is too damn much.

You don’t want a mustang with less than 8 cyl.
I had an 08 3v mustang and they are fine. It’s a little hard to justify now when you could find one with a coyote but fuck it. If you like the car and it’s a good buy? You can mod it and make more power than you’ll ever be able to use. Plus the 4.6’s of every variety sound better than the coyotes.

I really appreciate everybody's involvement in this thread. Mustangs are my favorite cars (always have been), but I sold my last Mustang in 2000 when we were expecting our first child. Five kids later, we simply were never in a good enough financial spot to buy another one until now.

I’ve had both. The 3.7 v6 with the 6 speed manual feels the same as the 4.6 v8 with the 5 speed manual as far as acceleration goes. I never missed having the 4.6.

Boringly reliable and extremely underrated, the styling of the 05-09 s197 is fantastic. Not sure why it's cool to hate on them .

I remember when the announced the coyote for the 11s, you could get 10s for silly cheap. Local dealers were trying to blow them out. Sub 20k for a brand new GT.

I have a 2007 GT/CS that I bought new in 2006. It's been parked with a hole in the block since 2019. That being said, the 4.6L 3 valve is a reliable engine at stock and mildly tuned power levels. It has a lot more low and mid range torque than the 2011+ V6 even if the V6 has a similar hp peak. It also sounds great unlike the V6.

Once you boost them, it's only a matter of time until a rod exits stage left. I beat the ever living shit out of mine from new to 105K miles, most of that time with exhaust, intake and tune. At 105K miles I put a vortech supercharger pushing 11 psi of boost and long tube headers on it. It ran great for 13K miles and then the bottom end let go. Haven't had time to fix it considering my work and young children.

I'd rather have a Coyote for my preferred power levels, specifically a Gen 2. I had an F150 Gen 2 coyote with a roush supercharger at 12 psi and a VMP tune. On paper it should have been around 700 crank horsepower and had 52K reliable miles before I totaled it. I still have the blower and plan to either put it on another F150 or possibly coyote swap the Mustang above, but that is $$$ and a lot of time that I don't have.

I had a 2010 around 10 years ago. Ford racing cams, for racing Intake manifold, gt500 throttle body, and a jlt air intake it put down 347rwhp. I drove it like that for a bit then built a forged bottom end and put a single 76mm turbo on it and made almost 700rwhp. You can make power with the 3v 4.6 but it isn’t cheap.
