Glad I didn’t sink more money into them. Even after buying a good helmet I just lost interest in the whole thing. I can go outside and watch critters in the yard or spook around on public land like a weirdo. Although they do really reveal the night sky if stargazing is of any interest to you.

My wife thinks they’re retarded because you can’t see through walls with them and they don’t do anything a flashlight won’t do.

Unless you need to passively watch something at night or you have a place to shoot at night I would recommend a hard pass.

I’m hoping that maybe attaching them to a telescope will make them worth it someday.

If you really want to get your money back out of them, just sell them on the EE.  I’ve sold and bought items costing way more than $1.5k through there and as long as you stick to members with high feedback, you’ll be fine.

I guess they would suck if you lived in town and didn’t find a place to shoot. Only so much fun you can have in the back yard. I still LOVE night shooting.

I guess dumb gun purchases? Nothing really sticks out to me. I’m pretty cautious with my purchases (other than NV) and wife is frugal.

Toss up between a few.

Bought an 1978 Blazer and put a shit ton of money into that for off road purposes. That thing was a piece of crap but when it worked it was super fun. I was never even able to get it road legal in CA at the time. That didn't stop me from driving it with the top off everywhere possible. I didn't even have plates on it. I look back at that time and particular vehicle and wonder how in the world i don't have an extensive criminal record. How i never got pulled over still amazes me to this day. That was probably in the late 90's or early 00's.

I also spent a shit ton of money on computer hardware and cooling equipment to "benchmark" with back in the day. Set a lot of records at the time but holy fuck what a waste of money in hind sight. That was probably the stupidest thing i spent money on, but it didn't seem like it at the time.

I'm a Ford guy but gotta ask, how the fuck could a 1978 Blazer be a POS? There are only so many things that can break. Did you fuck with it and screw it up? Seriously puzzled. Engine bulletproof, Trans bulletproof. Rear axle swap them out with Dana or Ford from the boneyard for cheap. Electrical, easy to rewire, no fuel injection or anything electronic. Not much else to worry about except rust

I bought an imported German Sig 226 LDC2.  Can't change the rear sight, changed the front sight to a dawson but the adjustable rear didn't have enough adjustment so it shoots low.  Bought a holster from some european maker but it wasn't good and the gun would stick in it on the draw.  Of course before I ever shot it I spent even more money getting the action worked over by a gunsmith.

At 19, still in College, just got NAUI open water license.  I was very happy about it, always wanted to become a SCUBA diver- (actually drowned once  in a pool and lifeguard was to busy talking to a girl while I was drowning).   Anyway thought I would be doing more diving, so worked  my butt off in one summer- enough to buy all the dive gears: BC, regulator, etc.   Last year moved old stuff out from basement before house being sold, noticed $1000 or so of dive gears I only used TWICE-  ended up giving them away.....

The only good thing out of the above experience is, I became a very good swimmer.  Knowing how to relax in water and float for an hour with just hands and legs is priceless.  Plus I found 1000 rds of 308 ammo by  Hertenberge still in battle packs , in an old beat up box. Receipt from Century showed Price paid .$15/ round and free shipping.

Because most people are never going to use it as intended - the likelihood of using it in an offensive or defensive situation are nil.  Most people will just use it as an expensive way to look at the stars, or walk around the backyard at night.  Cool, but loses it's luster rather quickly.

I live out in the country, and there is limited use for NV, other than prepping and cool factor.

If you're looking to hunt - thermal is better. I've used the shit out of thermal for coyotes, varmints at night and we've even caught trespassers on the neighbors property using thermal.  They would have been undetectable with NV.

@ckp68 that makes sense. They aren’t in the running for “cheap” helos around here, especially prized for their high altitude capabilities in my state.

The 500 is an amazing machine, I had a customer that has a ton of them used for electric utility work. Nothing like watching a pilot pulling sockline with one of those, some serious skill involved in that

I think shooting with nv is about the most fun thing I can do with clothes on. (Or off if I’m honest)

I love ringing steel at 250 in pitch black, or sneaking up on a group of hog.

I think the people that don’t like NV actually need to get their ass out and have fun.

Really confusin me here.

Thermal is good, but if your looking to actually move around, drive the jeep/gator at 50mph, you kind of need nv.

I’ve played with some pretty pricy thermal stuff. While it’s cool if static, that’s pretty boring to me. Pvs/breach combo is nice though.

Navigation (I assume you mean on foot) would be a legitimate use, and may be a good reason for you to buy NV.

If you do a lot of travel at night where you need to travel with light discipline then they may be useful, but at least honestly evaluate your needs.  If you aren't walking around a lot right now in the dark, you probably won't do it with NV.  Especially if you have no reason to and are only doing it so you legitimize your purchase.

A good powerful LED flashlight is more useful at night if you don't need to be dark.

You aren't driving a jeep or gator at 50 mph in the woods/fields where I live.  Especially with NV.  It's probably useful in wide open areas.  It's not as nice in dense woods.  Not much to see.

ETA: Thermal lets you see those hogs through brush and woods.

I think we have two very situations and this proves that neither one is superior to the other.

I've used them.  It's still a bunch of green leaves on green, 5 feet from my face.

It can be useful, but not for the cost, for me.  Thermal serves me much better for my uses.  I can use it to see through the brush.

I've done extensive cost benefit analysis of thermal vs NV.  I really want to say NV would suit me better, but I realize that I would grab the thermal 90% of the time and the NV would be relegated to very few uses.

ETA: the backstory of catching the trespassers was a good example.  We found them because we were glassing for coyotes, and saw a weird thermal signature partially behind a treeline about 300 yards away, parked by the road, but concealed from view.  Focused in on it a bit and saw it was a car - we were seeing the hot hood and heat from the exhaust.  We moved over closer to it and checked the neighbors farms and saw 3 thermal signatures moving across the hayfield towards the farmhouse and outbuildings.  We called the neighbor and headed over to support him while watching the trespassers.  We rounded them up by surprise between his barn and house.  Cops showed up about 30 minutes later (they were called when we first notified the neighbor) and one of the dudes had a few warrants.
