I'm watching a documentary and they mentioned $500 bills, I haven't heard about these since I was a child when I had a relative that worked at a bank and she said every Friday the black guys would come in to cash their checks and always asked for the $500 bill

Ive never seen one and don't know this history on them. Im guessing there was a specific purpose for creating and also ending them.

They show up on Pawn Stars sometimes. Interesting money, they're still considered legal tender too although it's worth more than $500. Ebay always has a bunch for sale.

Way longer than that. The c note has been the largest in quite a long time.

Back during high inflation times - depression era. They also had a 1000$ note.

My dad was a magician- it was always part of his trick to cut a 500$ bill in half. He never could quite save up for the 1000$.

I wish I still had the bill. It was a 1934 issue I believe.

always figured they are like the $1000 bills and larger denominations, only used between banks and the average joe isn't going to cash his check and get one to impress his hoes..

They also made 1,000 5,000 and 10,000 dollar bills.

Probably did away with to make it harder to transport large quantities of cash for illegal things.

Wish they'd bring it back.

But they probably want cash to go away, so they're more likely to discontinue the 100.

Banks need to make 50s available at the ATMs.

Interesting.  I got issued a lot of $500 bills at USAF finance offices when drawing travel advances up until the mid-1980s when they were withdrawn from circulation to make drug trafficking harder.

Are you sure you aren't thinking about $1000 bills?  I never saw one outside of somebody's bill collection, save the time Dad took me to see the last one the local bank had on-hand before turning it in.  "You'll never see another one of these in circulation."  That was back around 1969.

Coin store owner was big into firearms - I sold him my Dillion 1050 reloader.

I took it to his coin shop to trade for silver when it was at $16.00 about 10 years ago —
He had a $10,000 paper bill in his collection. Also had a few full auto firearms too.

First and last time I saw a $10,000 dollar bill.

McKinley is on the more common 500.

A nice or decent one would set you back a grand and that was 10 years ago.

The 500 and 1000 are still out there in collectors hands, and they are still legal tender despite being pulled obsoleted.

My grandfather worked for the mafia in Baton Rouge in the 50's and 60's.  He had stacks of money and many were the $500 bills.  I've seen the $1000 and $5000 too but not many.

He worked on the gaming machines and jukeboxes for "The Family". Very low level stuff. I used to like to use the change sorting machines.  He'd have sacks and sacks of change and me and my cousins would sort it. All of it was silver back then too.

The really big bills were mostly for banks transferring money between other big banks. This was before things could be done electronically. They dont make them any more. They are still legal tender but the collector value is much more than face value. The reason we dont have anything bigger than 100 today is because of 'counterfeiting'. At least thats what they say.

Holy shit, giving away $500 during the Great Depression would have been an extremely generous gift.

when i was younger a family member worked in a bank. i could have gotten one or more 500 dollar bills. and it would have been to keep. the problem was, its not worth it unless you hold onto it. they are cool but youd loose the value of that thing over the years. its like buying a 500 dollar antique something that will never be worth as much as it would have been, even if you invested in CDs over the years.

Yeah, I think that’s exactly what he’s saying. 1969 could be described as several decades ago, not several years.

My grandpa had at least one $500 bill and at least one $1,000 bill. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. He would always let me look at them when we would go visit them. Him and my grandmother both passed within a few months of each other back in 2011. I have no clue whatever happened to those two notes. I just hope they never got deposited or spent for face value, but they probably did knowing my family.

I have seen a few of the historic big bills.

They rarely came through to us as people kept them but the few that got spent or tendered at the bank got sent to the to a Fed bank to go back to the treasury for destruction.

It was an odd sight to see a bagged single bill as a consignment in a shipment.

When I got married in 1987 my new Father in law came over to the house. He said I have something for you guys and pulled out a $1,000 bill. Turns out one of his buddies was a Banker and he was able to “borrow” it long enough to give it to us. He said his dad gave him a $1,000 bill when he got married and he wanted to do the same but since they were out of circulation we couldn’t keep it. He wrote us a check instead and took the $1,000 bill back to his buddy at the bank.
