It really depends on the restaurant where I am eating. If it's a "new to me" location, I'll usually go with cheese enchiladas or beef tacos. If they can't do that well, I won't be back.

I love most Mexican foods, but it’s hard to beat a legit beef cheek or beef tongue street taco with only cilantro and onion on it. Some chips/salsa/guacamole on the side with a cold Jarritos soda is always a good way to help them go down.

Enchiladas of any kind, not from SA, not from Austin, not from Houston. From the TX RGV, it's the best and cheapest MX food in the state and it's better than you can get in the northern half of MX too. F'n fantastic. More of a gravy on top instead of enchilada sauce.

Burrito Carne Asada (Large flour tortilla stuffed with steak covered in white cheese)
or Steak Chimichanga (pretty much same thing just deep fried) then covered in white cheese sauce |

Lengua tacos, chicken fajitas, ceviche, shredded chicken quesadilla.

Quoted: Not restaurant but what do order when you go out for Mexican food? View Quote Real Mexican food like in Mexico, probably a steak but you need to know your Argentinian cuts. |

Wife and I love a stuffed avocado. There are a couple of restaurants locally that split an avocado, stuff it with steak and cheese, batter it and then deep fry it. They are delicious.

Quoted: I judge a Mexican restaurant by their tamales....One of my past coworkers from Mcallen TX always said, if a restaurant cant make good tamales, the rest of the food will not be to good View Quote That might work but only insomuch that the restaurant makes tamales and serves them every day if the week. Also, places that serve tamales one day a week are likely giving you freshly made tamales, while places serving tamales all week might be reheating frozen tamales. |

That looks like a scan from a 1970s Betty Crocker ¡Taste of Mexico! cookbook. |

Quoted: Love it all but I dream of Chili Verde Burritoshttps://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif View Quote My thinking since I was a kid when eating at a mexican food restaurant was "If Green Chile was on the menu, then it was the only thing on the menu". Lately though I have grown tired of an endless stream of mediocre Green Chile. Chile Rellenos has become a target for me, and the elusive Rajas plate which I seldom find. If you don't know what Rajas is then here is a picture. |

A really good enchilada with beans and very good spanish rice is hard to beat. Or an excellent hard shell taco supreme. Or on the side with the enchilada and sides on the side of that. See what I'm sayin..

Tacos al pastor are my weakness. Only have gotten good ones in MX.
Love me some pork tamales also. Local Mexican place has a mojochate with meat and seafood for 2 that is delish. Also a ranchero pork enchilada dish that is to die for. |

Quoted: What is a Good Chile Relleno? View Quote Roasted/skinned poblano, deseeded and membrane removed, stuffed with whatever, dipped in a super light and fluffy batter (almost like a meringue), and flash fried. Delicious. Super hard to find a decent one at a restaurant. They always have heavy breading, which totally ruins the dish, but “chicken fried stuffed pepper” is easy to make, and people who don’t know any better will eat it. |

That is the gatefold of ZZ Topp’s Tres Hombres album. Takes me back to my teens.

Pizza or hamburgers but mostly chicken or steak or ribs but sometimes fish. Mexican food is all the same shit in a different tortilla or shape. So probably tequila.

Authentic street tacos. Like Al Pastor, or Barbacoa. Corn tortilla, the meat, raw white onion, cilantro and a little bit of sauce.
