Belgium made. Start turning tricks to pay for one.
DSA makes good stuff, much cheaper. |

whichever one is best for slotting goddamn floppies.

That really depends on how much you want to spend. Right now is pretty late to get into the game and the market is as bad as AK74s. Quality parts kits/receivers are expensive, and preban imports even more expensive.

Dont buy one if you want to mount an optic. Not a very good platform.
Beautiful rifles but not as accurate as a AR-10 or M-14 |

Austrian guns are nice. Smoothest shooting 308 I've ever shot.

Been struggling with that myself the last year or two. FAL world is kind of complicated. DSA is the only thing currently being built and I read a lot of bad reviews on them. The used market is all over the place, ranging for kind of pricey to freaking nuts. The search is on the back burner and likely to stay that way for a long time.

Heavy, check. Long and awkward, check. 4 moa rifles, check. Better options in 7.62x51/.308, check.

The problem reccommending FALs is that the parts used to be cheap, and folks built them themselves. There were several US parts makers, and as always, quality landed on a spectrum.
An early parts kit gun could be an excellent rifle, or a shit rifle... and it can be hard to tell by looking unless you're an expert. The barrel may be timed poorly, and the headspace could be off. You could have parts from the UK, India, Argentina, Isreal, and the US on the same gun. I say if you're looking at a 90's parts build gun (second hand), shoot it first and/or consult an impartial expert. If you are looking for new, DSA, because I'm pretty sure that's your only option. |

DSA is the main player now that all the kits and stuff has dried up .
I got mine years ago from Ohio Rapid fire . I think he passed on a few years back . I love mine . Good luck op |

They can be 1 1/2" 5 shot @100 yd guns but usually are 3"-4" at 100yds. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

For a collection, shoot a few rounds every now and then, sell it to pay for assisted living? Get a real FN FAL.
Want to shoot it with as much 308 as you can afford? Get a DS Arms, you got a warranty, you got someone to call, they have had their downs, but are back on the ups as much as most companies. Looking at a Springfield is an option, they have gotten pricey’er. |

I recommend you steer away from the FAL unless a 4 MOA boat anchor with limited aftermarket support/accessories.
I monkeyed with FALs for a decade back when parts kits were cheap and one could get mags for $5 or $10 apiece. You can mount optics on them, but the buttstock is designed for use with irons. A nice large frame AR—DPMS, Armalite, whatever, will be worlds easier to use and have four times better accuracy. |

If it's for shooting, DSA, because they're still in business. Some of those collectors grade FALs will hurt your feelings if you break an original part these days. Same reason I would never suggest someone spring for a converted Saiga as a shooter's AK in current year.

I sold my Herstal made 50.00 18 months back, because I needed the money.
I got $3,500 less 10% consignment fee and it was truly a sad day for me. Bipod, bayonet, ARMS slide in scope mount, 3 original mags and a cheap case. Chris |

I like the Israelis I built on DSA receivers.

Be patient and track down a DSA Stg.58. It's a Steyr parts kit with a Steyr barrel built on a receiver from LMT.

Good luck. The FAL salad days are over. If you can find a good STG-58 pattern FAL, that's a safe bet. Good luck finding good magazines, though. The polymer ones are mediocre at best. The good metal ones are super hard to find or expensive.
Still a great rifle and worth owning if you can do it reasonably. It is no replacement for a good AR-10 pattern rifle of course. Still a fun shooter and collectable. |

Maybe a build on a parts kit with a shot out barrel or using Tula junk. 4 MOA was the max dispersion permitted for a rifle to be kept in service. I'm not sure they'd even let them leave the factory shooting like that even though that was barely within acceptance standards. They also came in different lengths and in lightweight models, too. |

Given the market though, my recommendation would be this
Traditional style, new everything, chrome lined barrel for longevity. Barrel is contoured for a bipod, so you could add that if you like (I wish one of my FALs had one). Not cheap, but available. You could also ask Atlantic or AIM Surplus if they are expecting any more any time soon. Both carry DSA FALs regularly and are usually cheaper than DSA directly - but are sold out currently. |

I’ve got an affinity for them…. Attached File
But yeah, if you want utility, go with a DSA. The days of getting a cheap parts kit and building one are long gone. |
