Oh, I love this scene..................of course, the reason why is because I did a modified version of the monologue as my own once.

I get a kick out of playing astronauts and oceanographers.

Loved that Cartoon as a kid!  The SDF-1 not so much, but loved the fighters.  Followed that entire series multiple times.  I have it in .avi on discs somewhere, might have to drag it out and dust them off.

what I particularly like about it is that it's a "real" ship.  We could build it right now if we wanted. (would not want to try the suspended animation sleep)

Yes. And such lines ... What a beaut!

2001 ruined a lot of SciFi movies and TV shows for me. I was just a wee bairn when I first saw it, and watching Star Trek a few years later at a friends house was like someone dug out old Buck Rogers episodes. I kept waiting for the punchline because I couldn't believe he was really entranced by the rubber masks and school play quality scenery.

Or maybe I have the dates mixed up ... I don't know when 2001 first aired on network tv, but I remember being too young to really know what was going on (not just during the last part when most people don't know what the hell is going on). I do know that I never saw Star Trek at home. I don't recall it ever being mentioned, in fact.
Dad was an aerospace engineer at Martin Marietta and to this day would rather watch a 4 hour docking maneuver than a show with dialogue, so that might have something to do with it

The rescue episode where the Peagus  goes down taking 4 battlestars was fucking epic. She was a bad bitch.

loved the episode, but sooo much fail. what military commander would sacrifice the larger, more advanced, more heavly armed, less damaged Peagus over the Galactica?

I just started watching the show on Netflix a few weeks ago, and this was exactly what I thought when I saw that episode.  I understand that the show is called "Battlestar Galactica" but still?  Pegasus was a superior ship in everyway, and it should not have been allowed to be destroyed like that when Galactica could have been sacrificed instead.

Apollo went in to rescue his father, not the Galactica. Adama would have sacrificed Galactica if the positions were reversed - It wasn't about the ships, it was about family. Adama once implied that he'd sacrifice the whole fleet to save his son ("We'll stay until we find him" or words to that effect)

I always thought the Halo USNC spaceships were neat in an ugly way. If you are building ships for space travel, I doubt you would be making them aerodynamic and cool looking.
