Not the 70's, but I made a few short trips in my '68 Continental when I still had it.
I say short because at over $100 to fill the tank, and only 8 MPG, I wasn't to keen on long drives in it 
ETA: I missed a chance at ownage

Cross country (Fla to Ca) in a 1973 Olds Delta 88 station wagon in 1975. What a cruiser that thing was, and slept two comfortably in the back. Good memories.

I had a 1975 Lincoln Contiental that handled as well off road as it did on. I once passed a bunch of guys in rail buggies out in the national forest near Athens with it. They were completely shocked. It absolutely ran like a beast. I miss the car.

I love this thread so very, very much.
My very first car was a 1973 Pontiac Catalina. It was big and it was the worst shade of green paint designed by man. It had a 400 cui motor, but only a 2 barrel carb and needed every bit of those 400 cui just to drag itself up big hills because it was so heavy. I could have hit anything short of a freight train and won. When you turned, the entire car rolled like a carrier during a high speed turn. I was the second owner. It had less than 15,000 miles on it, and had just over 32,000 miles when I sold it. Now, this would have been a pretty typical first car in the 1980s for a kid...but I started driving it in 2002.
It was a great first car.
MMM, dat green plastic and fake wood interior. 
ETA: Completely forgot to address the question in the original post. Last road trip in the car was probably in 2005 sometime. I had no problems driving this car anywhere, and it went on one hour+ drives all the time.

1977 caprice classic. From SLC to Los Angeles to see the Raiders play the Colts in 1992. Went to Disneyland too. (L.A. Raiders vs Indianapolis Colts btw.)

My buddy Jeff had a 1971 Plymouth Fury.
We drove from LA to Oregon and back. it cost us about 220 dollars in gas. 
My last tuna boat was a 1968 Coupe De Ville Caddy that my dad let me use after a drunk totaled my California Bug. 
It had the 472 big block in it, I could do burnouts in first and second gear with no problems. I drove it from 1979 to 1980. It was a nice car, it had less than 25K on it when my dad bought it in 1978. |

Last trip like that would have been in an early 90s Caprice Station Wagon like this one:  Yes, it was a 90s car - but it's not substantially different than a model from the 70s once you get past the sheet metal. |

My first car was a 1973 Plymouth Fury III. Neither window or door on the driver's side would open so I'd go through drive thrus in reverse and the passenger would order. On road trips the passenger would jump out, run around, and pay the toll.
This thread brings back memories of road trips to Killington, VT with our long 1980's skis and bags in the trunk with room to spare. Stupid kid driving way too fast with a car load of friends on half bald tires in raging snow storms to go skiing. Somehow it was safe back then....

Indianapolis to Kings Island in my parents '67 Pontiac Bonneville. Took 2 girls in my high school class. Had a blast. The car had a rag top.

Drove from WA to MO and back in a 70 Eldo like this 75. (Ours was Firemist Red at $80 a pint, not this one - just a picture for the 14'ers) Great car for cruising at 120 with 6 people in it.  My Father bought it new in the fall of 69 for just shy of $10k. Last car that I drove cross country in was a 78 Chrysler New Yorker. Biggest POS on the face of the earth. But it did get us from WA to MO to TX and back. Ours was Silver. Dad traded the Eldo off on it. Worst car deal he ever made.   Last vehicle I drove cross county was an 08 Ford F250 6.4Powerstroke. Drove to Tenn and KS twice pulling a 25 ft trailer. Ed eta; on CL always looking for good deal on 60's, 70's LY. |

My buddies dad had a Plymouth Fury. He would give us a ride sometimes. We put 2 bikes in the trunk one in the backseat and all 3 of us could sit in the back.

But cruising on I40 or Old 66 was great. Turn on cruise control , Hank Williams Jr on the stereo and relax. Lots of people tried to buy it from me, but I promised it to the kid. He sold it to an ulucky squadron mate when he went to Korea, but it apparently became the shop party mobile while it lasted. |

Last July I drove my 1962 Plymouth Belvedere from Cincinnati, OH to Yuma, AZ. Drove with an old college buddy and had a blast. Followed old Route 66 from Oklahoma City into Flagstaff, through Winston, AZ. Didn't see anyone standing on the corner though.

Last land yacht I drove was a 76 Olds 98. It had one mirror (factory), and enough body roll to make you seasick. Low miles too. |

I remember being a little kid and going to the grocery store with my aunt for the last time in her ? station wagon with the rear facing back seat me and my cousins were allowed to sit in. My aunt also yelled at my mom for playing with the power seat too much. It was some sort of gm is all i remember.

'68 Cadillac yacht, seven guys, San Fran to L.A. to the San Diego zoo in college on holiday. Picked up an eighth guy in San Diego for the road trip back to school in 1983/84, or so.

1974 Cadillac Coupe Deville that belonged to my great grandmother that had been Garaged for yrs, only had about 15k miles on the OD and a big ole dent from the last day she drove it. Really weird to drive one with the big long hood again and I started driving as a kid in a 1976 Monte Carlo

Last 70's car was my 73 Laguna. Used to drive it home to visit the folks. Always fun.
Last big car was my wife's 82 Olds 98. That was a road trip car. You could sit in that thing for 5 hours, stop, get out and it was like you just got off the couch in your house. No stiff, achey knees, back, hips, etc. The most comfortable car I've ever had/driven. The ride was like sitting on the couch at the house. Smooth as could be. The bumps where there, you just didn't notice as much. Every time I got in the K5 Blazer or my 81 Z28 I get a fleeting feeling that something was wrong and then I'd realize the road wasn't any rougher than normal, I just wasn't in the Olds 98. That big sucker got great mileage on the road, too. 17 average with a best of 19 mpg one trip. Around town it was an 11 to 12 mpg car. No overdrive, just a 3 speed automatic and 350 4 brl. carb. |

We had a Buick Electra. My father traded in a Camaro for it.
The Buick went from Virginia, to Alaska, to Wyoming, and finally to Tennessee. My sister took it to college with her and wrecked it. |
