P38

Fast, turned, climbed, flew like a jet before it's time because of to counter rotating props.   Had there been more they would have been the fighter with the most kills.
View Quote
I believe it was Adolf Galland who felt the P38 was not a hard plane to fight, but it was dangerous if it got a shot at you due to its guns.

The German pilots tended to respect the Spitfire the most. They had the advantage of flying the opposition planes.

The P51 was respected because it was flying over Germany. It was a capable plane, flown by capable pilots, made in considerable quantity, and it had the range to escort bombers the whole way. It wasn't an exceptional dogfighter, but it tied together a number of key things that enabled us to dominate the skies of Germany.

Jug, if my life dependend on it.

8 fifty-cals, a big-ass air-cooled radial (not susceptible to coolant damage issues), tougher-than-hell construction, great overall power/weight performance, great handling with the parabolic wing.

Sure, i'd wish I flew a Mustang when i got home.  You know..., to impress the girls.  But damn, the jug was a tough son of a bitch, which would make sure i actually did get home.

Corsair, because having MARINES on the side is better.

P-38s are badass but I never really liked them.

Hellcats and Jugs are tanks, I would take either depending on theater.

P-51s just look like Merica.

P-40s are sexy but outclassed.

This. Something, something 19-1 kill/loss ratio.

I would have to fly the P-47. It was more durable than the Mustang, had longer legs than the carrier birds, had a wide tail dragger carriage that would be better suited for non paved runways, and it had quite an impressive bomb load. The P-47 also had a very roomy cockpit (I wouldn't fit in a P-51).

Then there are the guns, P-47s came standard with 8 .50 caliber M2s, and some P-47Ns in the Pacific were fitted with 8 .50 caliber M3s and could spit out 9600rpm of hate.

If not I would have voted for the Spitfire.  Lacked range and compared to the P-51, but it was a consummate dogfighter in the hands of a pilot who knew how to use it.

This is the sexiest plane of all time in my humble opinion. It would be my #2 choice behind the lightning if this poll was for allied aircraft and not US

My choice as well. I have a family member who flew a number of these. He told me the p-47 was a survivor. His post war favorite was the f-82. He said the p-38 was a good plane but the torque of the non counter rotating props fought you in turns.

This is a great article about why the P-38 wasn't more successful in Europe. http://www.historynet.com/p-38-flunked-europe.htm

With better multi-engine training and a better cockpit layout with better heating, the P-38 could have an awesome fighter in Europe, like it was in the Pacific.

That's a big negative. They were a crucial stop gap escorting bombers durring the absence of the mustangs.

Mustang or Thunderbolt, the P-38 is out as it's heater wasn't very effiecent, and the Allison was sometimes hard to get parts for in the european theater. Hellcats real claim to fame was ruggedness, I know it had a high kill ratio but let's put that in context, what were they flying against, it was later in the war, and we had a overwhelming number of them. P-40 was just plain obsolete, and the corsair was a great plane, but it had some nasty manners that hold it back, except for the most seasoned of pilots.

The Northrop P-61 Black Widow, named for the American spider, was the first operational U.S. warplane designed as a night fighter, and the first aircraft designed to use radar.[2][3] The P-61 had a crew of three: pilot, gunner, and radar operator. It was armed with four 20 mm (.79 in) Hispano M2 forward-firing cannons mounted in the lower fuselage, and four .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns mounted in a remote-controlled dorsal gun turret.

The other problem with the Lighting (my dad flew them until they gave them mustangs) the FW190 and ME109 could dog fight at a higher speed then the lighting could, dad said he loved it, and most kills were diving or climbing hit and runs, but to get into a high spec turning fight you were a goner.

Oh, and one thing to remember guys is, in WW2 the control surfaces for the planes were manual.

As per Chuck Yeager's book, in a dogfight you get physically worn out from muscling the controls around (not to mention high G maneuvers without modern flight suits). What this means is, as Chuck put it, you were at an advantage in a knockdown, drag out, dogfight if you were physically stronger than the other guy. If it went on long enough, apparently you could see the fatigue of the other guy by how the maneuvers he was making changed.

The Germans actually pioneered the bubble, which was "borrowed" from the Japanese. The zero started the trend, the Germans improved and perfected it on the FW190 and we took it to a new level.

Lol at the Hellcat fans, couldn't hold a candle to the Hog.
The F4U is THE plane for 20,000 and below.
Above that, any of the USAAF (38,47,51) aircraft.

But all around........the Corsair was the best fighter of the war.
