This guy who just walked past my place is bringing them back! Definitely less bulky than the stereos of the past.

There was a point in my life the only thing I wanted was a duel cassette deck boom box. Never could save the $45 lawn mowing money to buy one.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of curious what he had. I'm guessing it's some modern bluetooth streaming speaker or something like that.

I could actually use something portable size like that when I go stay at my buddies place and dog sit.

The sling style fanny pack method is the go to around here for those who don't use a proper belt and holster.

There’s an exhibit in the American History Museum that details the history of the boom box. It’s pretty interesting.

Still have mine - it still plays (1984 vintage).

That said, times have changed and I bet an Amazon Echo dot sounds better.

Been researching a radio sound system.  Lots of effort to sound better than an Echo dot.  Echo dot on sale was $30.  New sound system is going to be about $1200.  It really hope it sounds better.  Tired of hearing a neighbors karaoke machine.

Not anymore! The classics in good condition are worth $$ so that and the gun would get jacked.

Also the blacks guys in the hood have replaced them with a cell phon on speaker or a Bluetooth speaker on full blast.

Hell yah I remember them. But these days, why? Who wants to pay the "D" cell tax, when you could get a smaller, more powerful rechargeable B.T. noisemaker?

Wish I could find a new one for my garage. Unfortunately, if anyone sold one these days it’d probably be Chinese junk.

I made a small fortune repairing them on the USS Midway while it was home ported in Japan and visited Asia, Australia, and the Persian Gulf.

The 1980s was pre-universal 110-240V 50/60 Hz power supplies.

Many a guy from the ship brought his boombox out into town and plugged them in - sometimes even stripping the wires bare because they didn't fit the (zappp!) outlet. The better ones had a protection circuit that would pop, some had fuses, but it was all profit to me. I went to Akiharba in Tokyo and and I'd find the places that sold the chips in bins for less than a $1.

Fifteen minutes with a screw driver, $1 worth of parts, and solder pencil was $20 for me.

Some of the guys had the monster ones with 8" woofers and horn tweeters, lots of lights, and dual decks.

We called those ethic projection devices because you could tell who was coming a block before they got there by the type of music that preceded them!

I had been begging for one in grade school.
My birthday was coming up and my parents said ok.
They took me to Hills, and bought some crappy single speaker cheap thing that I couldn't show anyone.

Couple years later, by older neighbor is joining the Navy and getting rid of stuff and sold me his for something like $80.
It was huge and amazingly loud. I think it took 8 or 12 D batteries.
That may have been the only time I was "cool". Probably not even then.

Flashback to the 80's!!!   I had an Aiwa boombox with a cassette player that popped out and you could use it separate like a Walkman.  I was riding my dirtbike and it fell out of my pocket and got run over by my bike and smashed into the gravel.  Man I was pissed!!
