My parents and grandparents collected these like they were gold, but never understood why.

They were like a loyalty rewards type deal.

Collect so many and you could get the fancy decorated china set.

In our house I was the king of those.  It was my job to fill the books.  I liked doing it too because I got to pick most of the things we got with them

I never used them but my mom sure did.  I can specify remember her getting a leaf rake, a trash can with a step open lid and one of those carpet rollers so you didn’t have to break out the vacuum.   Weird, the things you remember.

They were "loss leaders" incarnate.  You would buy hyper-inflated groceries at the local S&H chain (which could be owned by anybody).  You would literally get a couple of pennies back on the dollar for every dollar you spent.
You then went to A&P Green Stamp stores to buy shitty, bulk-rate items that were utter garbage.  Think "Made in China" circa 1976.  Nowhere near as good as "Made in China" Wal-Mart shit of
today.

Really took advantage of seniors and people who couldn't understand math.

After you saved 87,000 you could cash them in at certain places for stuff.

Remember them from the 60's and even into the 70's.

I always remember the old lady that would yell at me when I forgot to give them theirs after filling up their car with gas. You would swear they were gold back then.
Then they would not leave until they made sure you gave them the correct amount.
Yea the good old days pumping gas in Tucson during the summer time.

I do, I think I've still got a few kicking around. This was back in the days before credit cards, WalMarts, etc. There was S&H green stamps, and the yellow ones (Top Value). You got books which you pasted these stamps in then when you had enough filled books you turned them in for "stuff." Good quality stuff too, small appliances, toasters, kitchen ware, mixers, camping equipment, you name it. At the time, it was a good way for people who couldn't afford to buy something outright to get good stuff in their homes. Now you just charge it and the devil take the high road.

You got them by shopping at local vendors. Much like those coupon books you can buy for local vendors today.  More valuable than the ones you get in the mail for free though. You'd get a certain number of stamps per dollar spent for all kinds of things and S&H had redemption stores that were just like a regular department/appliance/hardware/sporting goods  stores where you could exchange them for goods.

We used to have Texas Gold stamps down here. Like all stamps, I'm sure, you could get double stamps if you shopped at H.E.B. on Tuesdays or whenever.

We redeemed them at a redemption center in Corpus.

I think about that now and again because we would get waterskis and ski ropes and the like. All that stuff worked just fine. I worry that today I would turn my nose up at that stuff because it wasn't Tier 1 gear. It sure worked, though.

Did you have a coin dispenser on your belt? I thought those were cool when I was a kid.

Coin dispensers and those cue balls for your antenna. Especially the orange 76 cue ball.
