A couple of things
1) I bet it is a Portuguese G3 (this is base on my knowing the fact that the Portuguese gave a lot of aid to Rhodesia via Mozambique and not my ability to discern the difference and I stand by to be corrected) 2) Based on the caption they are in Zimbabwe, not Rhodesia... so the picture would have been 1986ish- though certainly the old dude would have fought in the war and he held out longer than most 3) The family ended up emigrating- ended up in New Zealand. I actually found the kid on FB (long story) I did not talk to him or anything 4) The image of the old man has become my defacto image across all social media because- I love the warning the picture makes, he doesn't look whole unlike me, and the fact that I do the same shit with my son |

My wife's mother's family came from Rhodesia and South Africa. Virtually all of them left for New Zealand, UK, or Canada. Those who left Rhodesia had nothing to bring. The banks prevented them from withdrawing.
Got some Rhodesian bonds around here with big numbers on them. Worthless now. |

My dad fought in the Rhodesian bush war, he loved his FN back then and if he could he would have another one in a heartbeat. He does not remember seeing G3's. Just FN's as they called them.

There's a good video of that night (or another?). I think there were hundreds of armed people walking around or guarding their properties. There were several cop cars driving around and they didn't seem to care. Funniest part is the bars were packed and no one in them seemed to care about all the armed Idahoans walking around.
