For sake of argument I am declaring soldiers (who fight as a team) and warriors (who fight individually) to be the same. Who does GD consider to be the most badass warrior in history? Use whatever definition off "badass" you want. Is it..

Other than current SF, I'd say the Polish Winged Hussars. Check their record against all comers and it was amazing.

Well, they fought an enemy twice as numerous and much better supplied while managing to take 1/3 fewer KIAs and and about half as many wounded.

That said - I don't think they qualify as the "most badass warriors in history", not by a long shot.

Gurkhas are NOT to be trifled with. I don't know what it is about them but they seem to pack a hell of a lot of badass into a little bitty dude.

I wouldn't want to fight one, much less a whole force of them. I'm glad they are on our side.

In all seriousness, one guy particularly came to mind:

Colonel John Ripley, USMC- read his story if you want to see someone that embodies badass. Navy Cross recipient Force Recon officer who is the only guy to graduate BUD/S, the Army's Vietnam era SOF pipeline, the British Royal Marines course, and the Marine Corps Amphibious Reconnaissance Course.

And just a generally standup guy.

Per NPS.gov...

Union combat deaths: 110,100
Confederate combat deaths: 94,000

So, the Confederates suffered 14.6% fewer KIAs.

Union combat wounded: 275,174
Confederate combat wounded: 194,026

29.5% fewer combat wounded.

It is important to note however that the North was on the offensive 90% of the conflict - in many cases attacking well entrenched Confederates with good interior lines. Not to mention, in the South's home territory. When the Confederate army went on the offensive in the summer of 1863 (in the North's home territory), the Army of Northern Virginia suffered 24% more KIAs than the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg.

For the record, I'm not discounting Confederate bravery or skill in battle, but the difference in KIAs and WIAs are primarily due to the fact that (as mentioned above) the Union army was on the offensive pretty much the entire war. The North had to completely dislodge the Confederate armies to win - all the South had to do to win was dig in and hold the line. So, it's not that shocking they suffered more KIAs than the Confederates did.

And the German paratroopers who defended the Bocage in France and Monte Cassino in Italy - they were tenacious fighters.

Honestly, the German fighting man and his commanders of World War II outperformed the U.S., Britain, and Russians both offensively and defensively by a huge margin throughout almost the entire war.

The Wehrmacht in general deserves a spot on the list, not just the elite units.

A tad exagerated for sure, as everything that ends up in Hollywood movies. But then again some nobody doint a youtube video doesnt change the fact that they were impressive warriors that had their people trained for war from a very early age. Maybe less refined (and also romanticised and exaggerated by Hollywood) Vikings were people that also had their lives revolve around soldiering.
Also the video is biased as fuck and at times downright lies. So the Agoge was all about dancing and poetry and not combat?. GTFO

Today it would be child abuse to have a kid trained for combat and beaten the crap out of to toughen them up, but psychological damage aside I bet such approach ended up with pretty badass warriors.
