Because it used to be that people painted them black and white so to be easily identified to allow the civilians to find them when they needed help. You know. To serve and protect. Now they just want to ticket you and abuse their power. Easier to do that when they can sneak up on you in a black squad with low profile lights. View Quote |

Ours still are. Costs 3000 more per car and makes it a bitch to sell at auction when we surplus them.

ive seen a trend where police cars reflect some aspect of their community. For instance Myrtle Beach uses bright baby blue like water. Another city with music history has music notes around the name. I like it. But I also like black and white classic colors

Since the days of when color even became an option, cars here were always just white.

If it hasn't been mentioned, resale value.
In our area, the vehicles are mostly all white, with black wrap applied, or white vehicles, with predominately black graphics. White vehicles have higher resale value. Jay |

It’s cheaper to use off the shelf colors and helps the resale value.

They are.
Penguins have a rare condition called Synesthesiac Color Blindness. When you hear a siren, you see colors that aren't actually there |

The black part would be racist......have you been living under a rock?

DMPD has SUV's instead of cruisers now, but they still do black and white.

Austin had also done the same going to Black & White. both used to run Blue & White color schemes. Sheriffs cars in most counties in S.E. to Central Texas tend to Brown-Gold or Gray-Silver. View Quote |

What gets me is that here in Arizona (not sure about elsewhere) police cars are coming out either solid white with white marking or solid black with black markings! Just enough of a shade difference that you could only tell if you're staring at it. At a glance it just looks plain-jane. Most likely to say "it's marked, see".

They probably cite their own study since they conduct the yearly study of patrol vehicles that pretty much every other agency in the nation use for purchasing and the automakers use to come up with new trends in patrol cars. In the 90's, manufacturers of police package vehicles stopped offering cars in multi colors. It was a cost cutting measure. Some agencies held fast to tradition and opted to go the extra expense and have the multi color paint done after market. Other's simply changed their traditional looks and added stripping decals. These days, decals and wrapping have replaced the after market painting. Our largest local agency has never strayed from their black and white design. However, their cars come all black and they wrap the white. Short answer is that solid colors are less expensive. Edit; I may be full of shit, but I did manage a PD fleet of over 50 vehicles for a few years in the early 2000's. View Quote Back in the nineties I was the commercial and fleet leasing manager for a large Ford dealer. We sold a lot of CVPIs, and many local agencies were pissed when certain paint choices became an option. It also surprised me how much it actually cost to put a new cruiser on the road. Radio, PA, light bar, push bar, cage, gun rack or locker, decals, spot lights, ruggedized laptop and mount ... It's far worse today. |
