I still remember the day he announced he was HIV+. But not for the reason you might think.
I was a teen working at Target(pre MILF heaven days  ) and he came on the TV's. You would have thought someone nuked DC the whole freaking place stopped and watch his announcement. I couldn't care freaking less. I've never been into sports and could care less if some dumb ass ball player suck his rod in the wrong place. I couldn't get over peoples reaction to this useless trivial information though.

Well, at the time a famous sports figure coming out as HIV+ wasn't "trivial information". That was a BFD, given the stigma AIDS still had at the time.

Early detection and newer medicine.
...and money. edit: Starting meds early is huge... so huge, in fact, if you have a significant exposure to someone that is HIV-pos doctors will strongly push you to start medicating and stay on the meds for the next 2-6 months until they can definitively clear you. Someone from a rival ambulance company had a stick and is currently taking meds even though they haven't tested positive. |

AIDS is not a death sentence. I had a kid the other day with a CD4 in the 50 (<200 is AIDS). He's not going to die any time soon assuming he takes his medication. I dont know anything about Magic's case, but I can tell you that there are a group of HIV+ people who are called "elite controllers". For reasons to be determined, these patient's are able to handle the virus on their own. They usually have low normal CD4 counts and undetectable viral loads without medication. Of course, this effect can wear off over time. |
