I’ve always thought of it being used as a reference to “Cool Hand Luke”

I hate being called Horse cock. It's not my fault I'm Mister head.

If I hear it, it's usually middle eastern people saying it. The dudes at the liquor store call every customer "Boss". To their credit, they aren't enforcing mask regulations and their American flag is larger than my house.

Quoted: I hear it more and more... What's up boss? Here you go boss. Have a good one boss. I've always taken it as an insult, as to the culturally enriched it means big ole sack of shit. Seems exclusive to the 40 and under crowd. I'm in my 30s, I say sir, man, bud. Never boss. It used to be heard only occasionally, now I hear it nonstop. Maybe I look like a boss, cop, or douche View Quote Convicts use it. |

Two guys I work with call me "boss". Well, one calls me "boss" and the other calls me "big boss man". Technically I AM their direct superior, but I never act like it (unless I have to). And I don't mind it, really. They don't say it in a demeaning/derogatory way, so I'm good with it.
But we also call each other "cracker" or "cracker-ass cracker". It's all in fun. And if someone gets offended (especially someone who's not even part of the conversation), fuck 'em. |
|
I've done that for years. Now everyone does it.

Takin it off here, Boss! (Cool Hand Luke) |

Damn, I was way ahead of the curve.
I was saying that 10-15 years ago. I also like chief, "thanks chief," "good job chief" "how's it going chief?" One other that's fun is "partner". I was walking the other day and dude calls me "parder" I think im going to start using that one more...maybe I can start another trend. Btw, glasses hung on the back shirt collar.....that was me too. |

Quoted: Prison slang. At least that's what I was taught years ago as an easy way to figure out who the former jailbirds were. View Quote Actual convicts (current and former) plus those currently emulating those segments for attention. When I was young, the only folks you saw with tattoos were jailbirds and some military. Was a safe bet a fellow had been in prison if he called folks boss and had course tattooing he tired to cover. |

Quoted: When I go to the shop the guys say "Yes, master" and I call them "boy". Tongue in cheek of course, only about 60% of them are black (want to hear people get down on BLM and such is talk to some black guys that the average number of years of retention is 20+). Yes, we have no HR at any place I've ever worked. The left would have a coranary when I buy watermellons in the summer and put them on ice for the guys to eat at the end of the day to cool off. Quoted: Growing up that was the standard for addressing adult friends. Authority figures got Mr/Mrs Last name, but family friends and neighbors were Mr/Mrs First name. Has this changed? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: I also find it insulting to put "Mr." in front of my first name. Growing up that was the standard for addressing adult friends. Authority figures got Mr/Mrs Last name, but family friends and neighbors were Mr/Mrs First name. Has this changed? It's gotten much more casual. Most parents just go by first name now. Drives me nuts. Mr, or Mrs. Then first name at the absolute very least. Corallary to that. I have noticed that many adult customer service people on the phone are starting to use, "Mr. (First name)" instead of "Mr. (Last name)". Sounds just awful and I have a profound dislike for that trend |

Don't let it bother you, unless they mean it as an insult. Kinda like "Bless Your Heart" in the south. When you know, you'll know.

Ya know, I've noticed the terms boss, bro, and bud used quite a bit more the past year.
I have also noticed the 40+ crowd will use boss more than others. I don't find it demeaning when our customers call me boss. I am one of the bosses and I'm usually who fixed their stuff. So, I find it endearing when an older than me customer calls me boss. Usually seems meant as a sign of respect in the instances I've been called it. |

Inmate slang for the CO's. Stands for Big Old Sack of Shit these days.

When I was younger, I worked retail with a very friendly guy who was in the habit of calling everyone “chief”.
One day a customer lost his mind and started the whole outraged “how dare you!” tirade. Apparently he was a Native American and thought my coworker was trying to be cute calling him “chief”. |

Quoted: Usually when someone calls me boss or chief I presume they feel that I'm the farthest thing from their boss or chief. The only exception is the guys I work with who are African immigrants (Ghana and Cameroon). I'm pretty sure they say "boss" because I'm the boss and don't mean any disrespect. (At least I hope so.) View Quote They take the word Boss seriously. |

This is weird.
I had a fat waitress call me boss at breakfast a couple days ago. I was thinking WTF? |

Quoted: Wrong. Everyone from the lowest officer to the warden can be referred to as Boss or BossMan. Both staff & inmates use the term to address whose ever in charge at the moment. The only one referred to as Captain is an actual Captain. Most times he's referred to as a White Shirt. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: That's the dead give away they have been to prison, calling you Captain or Boss screams inmate. Wrong. I spent 25 years as a Correction Officer and never have heard an Officer call someone Boss or Boss Man. Either it was by Rank, nick name or their last name. Only an Inmate would use Boss. |

Well my boss said he didn't think it showed respect when I said hey asshole. It confused everyone at work.

I don't like it, but I worked a lot of jobs at prisons.
I don't think most people mean any disrespect by it. |
