Are you hunting to harvest the pigs or just get rid of them?  If you're treating it as pest control, FMJ's will work fine. Some will die in the spot, others will go die somewhere else.

At Thanksgiving I killed 14 in a little over two hours using 55gr FMJ's.

Just pest control. Got a few farming buddies that have even more farming buddies. It's just nice to get a kill count sometimes for a sense of accomplishment and a job well done

Reloaders don’t run out of ammo.

How many hogs are you shooting that the difference between brass and steel hurts the bank account?

I get it. My in-laws farm and ranch and they have more hogs than they know what to do with. I went out two nights ago for about 4.5 hours and probably saw at least 300 hogs.  It is satisfying to know there are X amount of dead pigs but it’s never enough. Wild hogs are just 4 legged cockroaches that need to be exterminated.

Idk. Sometimes go out a few nights a week. I don't necessarily have to have steel case. Figured it would be cheaper. Just been blasting at them with high dollar 300blk SST and/or Barnes TAC-TX forever and thought I'd try to mix it up. Down to my final thousand rounds of SST 300blk. Figured I'd switch to 308 to save my 300 ammo.

Amen. We're lucky that it happens to be pretty fun to do the exterminating!

Well I was going to say 308 sp would be too much horsepower, but then I remember videos posted using high tech 6.5g, and some hogs needing multiple hits,  which would be in the same ballpark.

ETA BTW: FMJ is only good for hogs because they are so prevalent and are considered an invasive species, I believe FMJ 556NATO/223Rem is not legal for hunting like deer etc, every state's hunting regs differ, so be sure to check for your state.

Your friend shouldn't have done that, as that is a no go for hunting here. Edit your post.

Soft nose 308.

BTW, I've killed plenty of hogs with OTM and FMJ in 308 and 556.

That is one thing I have never really got my head wrapped around. We use OTM ammo to kill humans from 308 caliber guns but it's not good for deer or hogs ethically. Why isn't it unethical if we use it on people. It's not to wound the person because when it's used we want as quick a kill as we can get since its a hostage shot or to stop someone from setting off a bomb.

I've only been hog hunting in FL and it was a blast. Made a bunch of delicious jerky. Are the TX hogs different?

I wouldn't feel bad at all popping a pig with a surplus 7.62x51 FMJ.  If you do feel like that isn't enough and want to pop them cheap, 12ga rifled slugs are cheap.

A hollow point Spitzer is nothing but an artifact of forming the bullet. It does nothing to help expansion. Yawing and bullet break up are the wounding mechanics. Fragmentation is also part of it. M193 does this. That why the Kenosha Kids 55gr Augulia did not exit

I just use FMJ. I like tracking the leakers after they're shot anyway.

Whoops, sorry guys. Not affiliated to site just came up on an ammo search.  Federal soft point is still a relatively cheap alternative to steel case.
