Bought an 1895 GBL .45-70 Government and probably will never use it to hunt but there it is. You certainly can't plink with these things as a box of ammo runs $30.00 and up. I also own a Springfield trapdoor (1873) The .45-70 may be an oldie but it's a "goodie."

Cast bullet reloads. Roughly $9.50 for 50 rounds once the brass is paid for.

Good pic I inherited mine from my dad who bought it back in the early '60's I also have a little box with two .45-70 cases and lead slugs along with a.45 long colt case picked up at the site of Fort Custer up in Montana years ago. Kind of interesting to place a modern brass casing next to them for comparison. Some things just never change

No desire, I have to have a desire. I don't even shoot my 454.anymore, no fun-no sun.

I do have a desire to own a marlin 45-70, that will sting the shoulder enough. Maybe to the point of another operation.

45/70 does not need follow up shots, one only shifts to the next target.

Master race, checking in.  I've only shot boring old 300 grain Winchester through this one, though.  I wasn't aware that it was safe with the 500+ grain monsters...  Is that the case?  @Whiskersthecat

Brenneke Black Magic Magnum's are no slouch at 602 grains/1502 fps at the muzzle. 6+1 in my 870 tactical and I even have the 1895'esque ghost ring sights. Also have the versatility of taking small game with birdshot as well. There is also the Dixie IXL-DGS at 870 grains/1200fps at the muzzle.

Gorgeous firearms!!!

I looked an 1886 in the 90’s, in Maine, while on vacation. The place dealt in antique firearms, primarily Winchester’s. The receiver had been case hardened but the blue on the barrel was original & perfect. So was the wood. $1700, I never will forget. Wish I hadn’t always been so frugal back then...

If you download Nikon SpotOn as an app, it has a lot of tables for various factory cartridges in there. For 556, 45-70 whatever. It's pretty cool
