My Fort Knox will open even if I’m not exact when stopping the dial at each number.

I noticed I can be almost two numbers off in either direction and it will still unlock.

For what I paid for this thing you’d think the dial would be a little more precise.

WTF, over.

No.  You have to be pretty accurate to get it open.

Sadly, I no longer need a safe after that tragic boating accident.

Yep, it's pretty finicky that way.

Being exact isn't an issue for me, though. It's losing track of how many complete revolutions i need to make between combination numbers. I dunno why i get tripped up on that, but whaddya do.

Only on my last number, can be 2 in either direction on that one.

I wanted my locks to be less precise, so I...

Took the lock apart and filed the bar that drops into the 'openings' of the disks, narrower, so the lock is more tolerant of mis-setting.

That's what I did to some S&G's.

Yeah but the odds of someone guessing it are still pretty much impossible. S&G dial on my Browning Medallion. I have other small safes for fast entry that are digital.

This, but, also, don't forget that most dial locks are made by the same few makers (S&G and???) and will vary between locks, and it probably doesn't matter what brand of *SAFE* you have so much as what model of combo lock it has.

Digital S&G so I have to be spot-on

If I did have a combo, I'd prefer one that allows you to be a tad bit off, say +/- 2. It's not like that significantly alters the chance of someone guessing the combo and doesn't require me to be perfect when spinning the dial

Basically no one is gonna crack a safe guessing numbers.

They’ll crack it with a crowbar. Especially if it’s a cheap POS safe

Never understood people who put $10,000 of guns in a $800 safe and don’t bolt it down!

Yeah, they just beat you with the crowbar until you give up the combo.  Never let them take you alive

Same as a high school locker, you can be off a bit on the dial and it will still work. Not a huge deal since you still need to know all 3 numbers to get sort of close.

Mine is a cheaper one, but it will still hopefully put up a fight with the way I installed it. I ordered one that will fit exactly into the side of my closet, I had to remove some drywall to jam it in there. Then I bolted it to the floor and filled it with ammo.

It was a cock sucker to slide in there, sliding it out would be near impossible now without removing some of the roof framing or somehow attaching to it and winching it.

There is a wall on the side of each side of the door, no way to get a bar on the door and get leverage on it as it sits.

I figure they would go for the stuff in the living room and barn before attempting to tackle into that thing. Lots of high dollar tools in the barn that are all inventoried with a camera pointed at it.

It varies. On the first number, it can be as high as 89 and as low as 85 and still work. On the second number, it can only be 43 to 41 and still work. On the last number it has to be right on pi in order to open.

Half the battle on an S&G lock is knowing the pattern.  A lot of people wouldn't be able to get in one even if the combo were written on it.

The S&G lock on my Browning safe has a fudge factor of half an index point.

In the event I ever have to get in it quickly, I have practiced telling myself to slow down and be exact when I open the safe.  If I were in a panic trying to open it I know I would screw it up.

If it ever goes out of time bang on the door by the lock and you can sometimes get it to drop in.

Sounds like my situation except a $300 safe

I don’t bolt it down because it’s an apartment.. can’t drill holes on the floor.
I was tired of stuffing everything in the closet and under the bed. I just need a temporary safe until I get my house.
