Looks like a nice bike for the money. Make sure you like the mid controls on in. If not you can always switch them up to forward or get highway pegs if you need to stretch your legs out more.

No. If you've been riding any at all... just, no. You'll be disappointed in short order and looking to trade up.

I just got back into riding this year. I went with a 15 Harley street 750. I paid $5,200 of the door from my local dealer. It has more power than the 883 and I'm pretty sure the 1200. It get 52 mpg and it's pretty comfortable.
Just another option. |

Quoted: it'll be a fine bike. I took my 883 on a 1500 mile round trip. Granted my Sportster isn't much of a Sportster except by name. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/433200/20220523_155224_jpg-2554492.JPG View Quote That’s a sexy fucken bike amigo. |

Are you in Washington op? I had a buddy who had a bike exactly like that. He passed away a little over a year ago. I know is wife is getting on with her life now.

Please for the love of god skip the 883 .
Either get a 1200 or buy a 750 rebel for like $1000 |

Quoted: Thanks I just got it and I want to do all that stuff you listed guy I got it from took care of the Comander II's for me. It is much different than the Sportster. View Quote Didn’t get to it this year but I have the parts to put 10” handlebars on it. Future plans are 95” kit and cams. Probably would make more sense to buy a newer bike but I really don’t know how many more years I’ll ride. I tend to run out of motor against some of the people I ride with. But it’s still impressive, I can get air under the front tire when I power shift 1-2! BTW what year is yours? |
|
Quoted: You will almost certainly regret not getting the 1200. Not because the 883 sucks, but because you’ll always wish you got the 1200. Seriously. Love Sportsters! View Quote Yeah having had a Forty-Eight 1200 I agree, skip the 883, Loved my 1200 in town, but on highways over 65 it vibrated a lot. Traded it in for a dual-sport this year and loving it. I would still like another Harley, but I think a Fat Bob would be the ticket since I can't afford a restored WLA. |

Don’t listen to the naysayers. If it speaks to you, get it.
I bought a 2013 Iron 883 new in ‘13. Previous to that I had a 250 Ninja in 1995 that I kept less than a year. I loved the Sportster like no other. First time I swung a leg over it and fired it up it was like auditory viagra. Kicked myself for not buying one many years before. I put 19k miles on it in 3 years, a lot of that highway. So many like to say it’s just an “around the town” or “bar hopper” bike. That is complete and utter bullshit. No bro, you’re just a soft around the town or bar hopper “biker”. I did many 500 mile days on it and I was in my mid 40’s. Also, no, I did not “wish I had gotten the 1200” or get tired of it in six months like so many self proclaimed experts like to say. I freaking loved that bike from the day I bought it till the day I traded it. I put Slipons, a tuner and intake on it and that was it as far as engine work. All that said, it’s not for every body. It rides rougher than most. It’s got less power than most. It’s not the best for longer rides though I used it for that a lot. You can throw a lot of money at it to improve everything but in the end it won’t have the power or ride of a big twin. If that’s what you want you will end up disappointed. I traded it for a new 2016 Dyna street bob. I liked that bike, put 29k on it in 6 yrs, but I didn’t have the same connection to it. I am now in a 2022 Street Glide Special and I have that same feeling about it that I did that Sportser. I’ll ride the wheels off this one I love it. Do it, find out for yourself and ride your ride. |

I had an 883 and had a blast riding with my buddy on his triumph, they were a good match.
Good riding bike with out the vibration of the 1200. Main ride was a deluxe so the sporty was setting to much so I sold it. Would love to get one with efi I need to start looking. |

The Iron 883 is the best looking Harley to me, If I was forced to ride one for some reason, that would be the bike.
All the larger Hardleys with all the chrome and shit look like cheep fair rides. |

2002 Sportster (read that as Carb and rigid mount engine)
I've had it for 7 years now and put about 35K miles on it. The last 10K with a Hammer 1250 kit. It's not a fun highway bike but it's a blast on the twisties. Vibration - yes. (rigid motor) It vibrates more with the high compression 1250 kit and needs 91 gas. But boy howdy is it fun! Curb weight is around 500# with the 2004 and up rubber mounts at around 550#. Still love the way it looks. Attached File |

I rarely ride on the interstate, but it can keep up. Most of my riding is about 60mph on state and country roads. |

Before I bought my Indian Scout Bobber Sixty, I was looking at the iron 883. They were about the same price and used 883's were going for the same price as new where I lived (this was the end of 2021).
I would recommend test riding it or at least sitting on it before buying. I'm shorter, so it was fine for me. Bigger guys though may find it cramped. I ultimately went with the scout sixty because I like the way it looked more and it is faster. It also felt lighter when I sat on it compared to the 883. They are about the same weight, so I am guessing it has to do with scout sitting lower. |

Started on a '72 Ironhead. Decided I didn't like working on my bike more than riding it, so ended up with a 883 that had been upgunned to a 1200. It was a fun bike for around town to be sure, but at 6'2 it always felt a bit small on me.
Eventually ended up with a Dyna. That bike was fun as well, and suited my frame a lot better. Had both for about 10 years. My son had a 2002 1200 Sportster, but he's 5'9 and the size of the bike suited him better. If you're going to get one, get a 1200 would be my recommendation. You'll appreciate the added power later. You Sportster guys; How tall are you? I'm 6'1", and wondering about going the Sportster route. (I had a CX500 for awhile and fit on it nicely...)

I should have listened to what people told me. I started on a 883(2014), went to a victory gunner(2015), to a softail slim(2016) and now have a street glide special(2020). Id say go as big as you can. Take the bike on the highway and ride it how you normally would and then make sure you still have enough get up and go from there.
Id def get atleast a 1200 or see if you can find M8 you cal always upgrade slowly when you get comfortable. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I think a Sportster 883 is a reasonable beginner bike. It's a little on the heavy side but cruisers don't tend to seem as top heavy as sport bikes or even standards. Be careful and have fun.

Quoted: I always heard the sportsters had a really small tank that needed to be replaced View Quote they have a 3.3 gallon tank. i reset the odometer every time i fill up. when i hit 90 miles, it's time for gas. i get about a hundred miles to a tank driving normally. if i'm pounding it, light to light, or running with the sports bike guys, it's more like 80 miles, filling up at 70. semi-rigid suspension, and forward controls makes a tank of gas a good days worth of riding. i have a throttle tender, so i can set the speed on the highway, and lay back and cruise hands off at 80. |

yes, but a 1200 sporty might do you better. I like the Harley sportys but being 6' 5" it was never an option for me

Hey OP, if you are coming from a dual sport background you will hate the 883.
550lb with 50hp gives you a 0-60 at about 6.5 seconds and 1/4 mile at around 15.5 seconds. You'll have an uncomfortable time on the highway with very little reserve power, even your own weight will noticeably come in to play when it comes to their anemic performance. When it comes to a V-Twin motorcycle, there is no substitute for cubic inches. That 883 performs like a 1980's 400cc 2 cylinder jap bike with the exception that it weighs 150lb more. |
