Imagine you could push a button that would release a computer virus so malignant that it would absolutely destroy the internet as we know it.  Would you push it?
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:50:29 PM EDT
[#1]
Probably not.

A lot of people would die
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:51:40 PM EDT
[#2]
Now that's a button worth pressing
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:52:08 PM EDT
[#3]
No.

But I would push the button that would kill the worst 5% of the assholes on the internet.

Do we have a strategic reserve of printed porn in this scenario?
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:53:10 PM EDT

Can I push it more than once?
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:53:11 PM EDT
[#6]
I'd push it twice.  Just to make sure.

I though you were talking about blowing the hatches off of underground silos and shit.
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:55:13 PM EDT

Yes, I would.

You got one?
Link Posted: 8/15/2020 11:55:43 PM EDT

Press the button.

It's ironic that high post count GDer's want to destroy the internet, the place they are on day and night.  Apparently the constant dope use has killed what's left of the brain cells.

But no more Twitter either.  I think it is worth pushing.  GD could always live on via HAM or some other way.

This doesn't mean an internet would not ever exist... it would just have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

A BBS.  It would require a 6000 line connection, and should offer QWK message posting options.

Werd.  It would basically bring the internet back into the hands of smarter, more knowledgeable people.

I would push it multiple times, then rip it out, and bypass the contacts.

The idea behind the push the button scenario is that you would have to sacrifice something to achieve a greater effect.  "Killing all pedophiles" really doesn't have much of a downside.

It would probably knock your whole exchange server offline at first but would get worse from there.  It is a virus that learns and improves.

This is more or less what I was going to say. Imagine if the only news you ever heard/saw/read was from the media conglomerates? We'd be fucked forever the first election after "the event."

It would radically reset the political power structure of the country: Bezos broke, Schmidt broke, Google broken, Zuckerberg broke, Dorsey broke. Conservatism only thrives on the edges of the internet and is being pushed further and further out each day. There will be a time very soon when we won't have a place here at all. Nuking it before that would be good.
